New intercooler time

I was doing some cleaning and painting today and I found a lot of filings and pieces of metal in my intercooler pipe. I dont want to put this motor together and fire it with any chance of metal filings being in the intercooler, so it's time for a new one.

Anyone got any suggestions on a new one? Stay with a 6.0 one like I had? It looks like it's pretty easy to break the bank on one of these, not sure i should keep doing that...

Holy crap, where did the metal filing come from, if you know? Diesel Innovations has a nice pricey one at $1,300. I was a fool and bought one. Its a nice IC but gee wiz!

Its gotta be pieces of piston. Nothing else it could be that I know of. That was the only failure. Ya, 1300 is a little more than I really should spend right now.

Lots of places sell upgraded 6.0 IC that should fit the mounts you have
I believe it would be less than that DI unit. I will say that thing is like sex in your hands...I held it...it was good...very very very good!

But how could the piston parts get to the intercooler? It would have to have more back pressure than boost to blow it back that far
Or am I missing something

I'm not really sure John, I have no idea what else it could have been though. There was a lot of filings, and 1 decent size piece that I could see, 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch.

Darin I had a radiator shop pull mine apart and clean it. I ordered an aluminum eend tank kit from bulletproof diesel for 260.00 and had someone tig weld it on for me. I have 500 into it.

Curious if anyone has experience with CSF's products. Looks like you can get all aluminum 6.0 intercoolers.

Darin, enjoying your engine rebuild thread, looking forward to progress.

Thanks for that thought Mike. I'm pretty **** about things though, so I just wouldn't feel right about using this IC even if it was cleaned. By the time I got a different one and did what you suggested I'd almost be at the cost of a new aftermarket one. I'm leaning towards a mishimoto 6.0 cooler. Clay has them for just over a grand. Lot of money, so I want to think about it a little more though.

Well, now I'm also looking at csf ones since you brought it up. They have some pretty good looking units, and even the heavy duty unit is over 100 dollars cheaper. The medium duty one is less than 500, and is a plate and bar design like the heavy duty one. I'm liking that one a lot, especially for the cost.

Why not just buy a used one? There are plenty of good ones out there.

I hear ya, I bought a used one before, but have a couple reasons. I've got more money in this motor than I'm worth, and who's to say a used one didn't come out of a truck with a blown motor and have crap in it. Like I said I dont trust cleaning mine, so wouldn't on a different one either. Second I will probably push 50+ lbs of boost, so should have a good one to fit the engine combination and will handle that.

I'm having a hard time talking myself out of that mishimoto.
