I am going to delete the DEF with a straight pipe and muffler.. a shop is doing it .. Also he is going to leave the EGR in and delete it .. I will have a racing tune.. So much info..confusing on this topic. so far I've read full remove EGR cooler and install a flow thru setup.. also a blocking plate.. and just disconnect it type delete. On my 2016 what is the benifit of leaving the cooler in and just unplugging and what ever else they do.. re route hoses? not sure what's involved. So there seedems to be three ways to EGR delete.
Limited knowledge here. But for sure if you leave the egr cooler on the engine and just use the block off plates it will make it easier for you to return it back to stock in case you sell it.
The reputable diesel shop that did my delete just disabled the EGR. I installed block off plates. I like it this way so in the remote chance an inspection place looks under my hood it won't be so obvious.

Installing the plates means taking those bolts off that break all the time in the manifold? I still don't understand what happens to the cooler etc by not installing block off plates and just unplugging the cooler etc.

Supposedly if you ever needed the cooler it might not work again because by being turned off it is still exposed to exhaust
Again.. Limited knowledge on my part as I'm still learning too. But I was told by a reputable source that the egr valve on the 6.7 is a bypass type. Meaning even when it's electronically turned off it will still be open allowing exhaust gasses into the cooler. That would be bad long term due to the build up of soot. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
All correct points in here. The final reason I left my EGR attached and just blocked off was because I didn't want to mess with the coolant system. A full EGR delete requires opening up the coolant system. I deleted at such a low mileage I didn't want to disturb any of the factory coolant. I didn't disconnect any of the wiring that goes to the EGR. The tunes are supposed to disable it while disconnecting the wires is the fail-safe.

The risk you run by leaving the cooler on the truck without using block off plates is that the EGR valve will be exposed to the exhaust gasses and carbon up. If you like the idea of being able to go back to stock for any reason and want a functioning EGR valve when you do, block off plates are the 100% fool proof method for that.
Once the the bolts have been removed, apply anti-seize and they shouldn’t give you issues. To reinstall the EGR crossover tubes would take less than 10 mins if you ever needed to go back to stock.

Gas hits the EGR valve first then has the option to be sent through the cooler or bypass it with the vacuum actuated bypass solenoid.
How much is the EGR valve to replace if it get's trashed from not using block off plates .. if I would want to bring it back to stock someday. Also by just disconnecting it is the result the same as using block off plates?

Disconnecting isn’t the same as using block off plates.
