buying 94 4wd

I lost my 92 straight 6 in the hurricane and I am considering buying a 94 5.0 v8. Anyone know of any potential problems I need to look for? How about the tranny? It has been garage kept, very clean engine, bed and interior. Has 142000 miles. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

142k is a lot of miles....once you get that high things will be starting to go wrong with it left and right as parts wear out.

I'd have the 300 or 351 over the 302 anyday, nothing against the 302, but in my opinion the 300 is a better truck engine. Is it a manual or an automatic?

Yep. No 5.0! No 5.0! JMHO, and NOT intended to flame, just don't think it was much of a truck motor from the getgo.

He's asking 7200 but I can probably get between 65 and 67. It has been very well maintained or so it seems. 4 wheel drive works well. Very clean both inside and out. What's wrong with the 5.0?

7200 is a ripoff. Look at the Kelly Blue Book value of it, its around 4-5K.

Personally I woudn't pay more than 3k for a truck with that many miles. My problems started happening at 150K. Nothing deadly but still costly and time consuming.

BTW .. Theres nothing wrong with the 5.0 V8 motor. Its proven itself well since it was introduced way back when..

Just in case you're dtermined to buy this truck, despite the negative responses, here are a few things you can check:

1. Tranny . Check fluid - better be red, not brown or yellow. Give it a good workout on the test drive. Test for proper shift operation and abnormalties. At 2000+ for an overhaul this is the component I'm most concerned about so if performance isn't A1.. walk away..

2. Suspension : usual trouble areas : Ball joints , all front bushings and insulators, rear leafs and bracket ( brackets are prone to rot and break). Check for abnormal and uneven tire wear. Again, the test drive can be revealing.

3. Exhaust and cat for rot.

4. Oil pan for rot.

I'm sure others can give you plenty of other things to check..

I would also ask the owner for a list of all the stuff that was replaced and post it here.

I agree with all the replys so far, with the exception of the contraversy between 300, 302, 351w. the 302 is a good engine, IN CARS. But for a truck, the 302 doesn't have the torque where you need it (low in the RPM range). I would personnally get a 300 if your not doing much highway driving or you are going to be pulling very heavy loads at slow speeds (up to 40 MPH). If your looking for pulling and highway driving, IMO, nothing beats the 351w. The 460 is good too, don't get me wrong. It's just that the 460 will get worse gas mileage in town, has many less cheap upgrades, harder to find parts (at least in my neck of the woods), and costs more to rebuild. The power IS AWESOME, though. The 351w can use many 302 parts and accesorries, which keeps the cost down on repairs. And in my '88 f150 351w 4x4, it does not seem to matter how I drive or what I haul/pull, it gets about 10-12 MPG.

just my .02,

later

I agree with the crowd here. I own a '94 302/E4OD/3.55 4x4 F-150.

1) My E4OD out before 120,000 miles, $1800. At 142k the transmission has probably already been done. Are there any service records?

2) The 302 is a disappointment because there is no torque below 2k and with 3.55 gears that is a problem. 4.10's would be a much better match for that engine.

That seems awfully high for a 94 F150. Heck, for that kind of money around here, I could probably find ya a newer F250 with either the PSD or the 460 and less mileage.

If you want something for mileage, the I6 is the way to go, if you want pullin power, the 460 is the choice. I'm partial, but the mileage factor is minimal. My 460 with 4.10 gears, 5 speed, stock exhaust, etc gets 11-13 mpg no matter how I drive it. Plus, if you go to a 460 in a F250, you get the full-floater rear-end, better front end (Dana 50 vs Dana 44), etc.

He has all maintenance records. I'm going back tomorrow to spend a little more time with it and be a little pickier. Around here (eastern VA) that price is very much in the ball park for what a truck like that goes for. The thing looks like it has been immaculately maintained. I am interested in that f250 jbalestri. Let me know if you see one. I'm due a road trip anyway as long as it's on the right side of the Mason Dixon Line and on the east side of the Mississippi. I truely appreciate the info guys. I need that in my time of loss and sorrow.

Just a few choices from AutoTrader. Out here in the Southwest, it is easy to find trucks at really decent prices. We are WEST of the Mississippi thou.

PS I paid $4700 for my truck last year with less than 100k on it.

I know that a few of those are a little older, but they are better trucks for the money, IMHO.

Good luck with your decision. It's a not a bad truck that you are looking at and may be excatly what you want.

In my days of selling cars, "It's only worth what someone will pay for it. How much are you willing to pay for it?" The answer will vary for everyone.
