I would not worry about the filter at this time. Even new out of the factory they were not very efficient in filtering. I removed mine to give the engine a cleaner look. I just make sure I check and change the oil regularly.

Alright got a chance to work on the mercury a little today, but i ran into a situation.

i bought a new fuel pump from lmc truck. I went to install the pump and couldnt get the pump low enough for the bolt holes to align up to mount the pump. I grabbed the OLD pump to try to put it back on and it aligned perfect. So then i took both pumps and looked for any differences. The only difference i saw was the OLD pump spring lever articulated a little higher than the NEW pump. The 'range of motion' was more on the OLD one. The little bit of lacking range of the spring lever on the NEW pump was keeping the bolt holes from aligning

so, i figured i would rotate the engine to see if the fuel rod would lower. It did a little. I tried to install the NEW pump. It just barely wouldnt align. So then i tried the OLD pump and it went on without the spring lever even having to compress at all. (Good thing the NEW pump still didnt align because i may have torn something up. The spring lever would have been at max play, with no room for the fuel rod to lift back up)

any thoughts on this? Dont assume i know anything haha. I just bought this truck and am 100% new to flatheads. Never have owned something this old. Thanks Yall

It is 43-4710
Both pumps look identical except for the articulation range of the spring lever

the new pump has about 4/5ths of the range of the old pump

I suspect that the issue is that you have a Mercury truck.

We're going to need the help from smarter folks - including our pals in Canada - to help with the solution. Merc engines had a longer stroke than the Ford versions. The question is: Are the fuel pumps different as well?

Do your heads have any Mercury markings?

Here is a snapshot of the page for Macs. Click the link and look at the pump dead center of the page. You may be on to something! It says it for a mercury 'economy' only....not to sure what that means.

Ford and Mercury trucks are the same, mechanically. They were both built together on the same assembly line at the same time, using the same parts. If the engine says 8BA, it's the Ford engine. The larger Mercury engine was not used in Mercury pickups from the factory.

All that said, it sounds like you either have the wrong pump, or a defective one. I'd contact LMC and see if they have any answers, and/or would send you a different pump.

Just to clarify, 'cause I'm slow, by larger do you mean the 4" stroke Merc?

Alright, im going to go back outside in a few to have another look at it (nice day in south mississippi).

i did call LMC truck yesterday. They are supposed to call me back during the week. Maybe its just the pump itself not having enough range of motion on the spring lever.

Okay fuel pump issues solved. Maybe this will help someone else who is not very familiar yet with their truck like me.

The new pump's lever travel was 4/5ths of the old pump.....well the last 1/5 of travel takes 3 times the amount of force to compress. I didnt force it because i thought i had maxed out the lever's range and was about to break it. My father came over and looked at the pump, pressed the lever against a piece of 4x4 scrap wood....bam, lever moved the last 1/5. Pump is now installed on the truck

thank yall for the input and helping me learn how to work on something 35 years older than me!

Compression readings on an engine that has not run in a while does not tell you much. Only after the engine has been exercised for quite a while, actually driven, can the numbers be meaningful.

Pertaining to your compression comment. I put marvel in the cylinders like 3 weeks ago (three drops each) and put the old plugs back in. Today i put new plugs in (slowly putting fresh new parts on it). I noticed when i rotate the engine by hand by the fan, i feel no suction or blast of air coming out of the spark plug hole (when my finger is covering the hole.....)
1. Does manually turning the engine by the fan not produce this?
2. Does this mean stuck valves?
3. When you look straight into the plug hole , is that a valve, and if so should i see it move when i rotate the engine?
4. Im going to purchase a compression tester gauge. Does the engine have to turn fast for it to read right? Or will it work by hand turning it.
