I'm a farmer with a fairly small amount of land. I really only want one truck that I can pull a 6000lb bobcat and still daily drive in a major metropolitan area without it being too rough and clumsy. I am also a student part time so this will be my ride to get to school.
I have about $25,000 to spend on a pickup. Will a half ton do it for me or will it struggle with light farm work like pulling 8,000lb trailer? I had a 2002 F250 7.3l which was kickass but kind of a lumber wagon. I'd rather not get another diesel due to maint costs.
Any ideas what I should shoot for? It doesn't exactly have to be Ford...
I'd recommend a low mileage 2014 F-150. It will pull what you described but still fit in just about all parking garages and tight parking spaces. They're also dang good looking.
A late model F-150 is what I would be looking for with those requirements. "Light" towing, city manners, AND be able to park it downtown? Definitely 1/2 ton territory there.
Hold on let's all take a step back...
first what kind of trailer do you have to haul this bobcat and how far will you be traveling?
I'm assuming you'll want 4wd but what about cab configuration...ext cab or crew cab? Shirt bed or long bed? For a farm truck and I assume your a young fella I'd say regular cab long bed 4x4?
I think what I'm going to get in an Ecoboost for $25,000 is something fairly played out.
I'd like an extended cab at the least and a 4-door at most. 6.5ft box would be good. The trailer would be probably a pintle hitch trailer totaling about 8000#. I live in Minnesota so it needs 4wd.
Nevermind-- looks like I can get a 2015/2016 with around 70,000mi ecoboost F150 for around $25,000. You think it pulls 8000# and stops it nicely or would I be replacing transmissions yearly?
I'd look for a 6.2 F250 gasser. The engine has proven itself over the past several years, The frames are different between the f-150 and then the 250 & 350 have the same frame. Just my humble opinion, I'd go for the heavier truck, better to have and not need than need and not have, ya should be able to find a decent 4x4 f 250 6.2 in your price range.
I'd vote super duty also. I dont care what ford spec paper says, putting 8k on a f150 is going to tax the suspension brakes etc. Then you want a ext cab or crew cab so that's going to take away from the trucks payload and towing. And 6.75ft bed? That's going to be worthless on a farm, heck I'm not a farmer and I ABSOLUTELY HATE my 6.75ft bed on my superduty. Tailgate needs to be left down for everything, go and get mulch and I can only get half of what I need becasue the bed volume is too small
I vote super duty as well, but I'm admittedly biased. I don't think IFS has any business being on a truck and I love super dutys. I don't think driving my f350 crew cab in town is difficult. You get used to it. You just pick parking spots accordingly and here's a tip - backing into them makes navigating a parking spot much easier. Especially when you go to leave. My ol' lady jokes that I can't park straight to save my life on the rare occasion that I pull into a parking spot forward, but those wonderful, big mirrors make backing a breeze.
