Stu and others that have used Fastenal before. Some young kid in Indiana bought a canvas 70s Jeep door from me. It was listed on Facebook marketplace. How he found it I don't know. It weighs 14 pounds boxed and measures 39 x 41. I knew it would cost a lot to ship. US post office said $96, UPS was $196.
So I thought I would try Fastenal. I called. I spoke to a nice lady. She told me it will be put on a pallet and shrink wrapped. I got on the website and filled everything out. Their return email said the charge is $196. I know they are cheap for hauling heavy bulky items but $196 for a 14lb door made of canvas with plastic windows going from Central PA to South Bend, IN.....
On second thought I am going to look over my form again. Maybe I put a zero behind 14. Or is there a flat charge per mile regardless of weight?
I’d be surprised if it was that much for such a light weight item. I believe there is probably a minimum charge, but would expect that to be nearer to $100, not $200. I’ve used them obviously most often for wheels, but have shipped axles, a transmission, a transfer case, etc. Their main requirements are that the items not be fragile or subject to damage in normal handling while on the pallet, and can’t exceed in size the edges of the pallet. Abe. Can you find a local business there that has a shipping accounts .Third party Maybe, and ask them to check shipping or maybe ship it for you if its all packaged up?
ive found that for larger and heavier items UPS retail rates vs third party ups shipping is nearly half price. Not so much on the lower end of things though.
You were thinking along the lines of my original idea. Hope another set shows up, or we can go deeper into the custom wheel option if you’re wanting to go there. But understand that’s more expensive and involves pulling the centers from your stock wheels. Stu
As an FYI I’d like to show you this eBay listing for one 17.5” to help you in your search for wheels, without finding other problems. This seller’s listing says the wheel has some torch damage, and gives a picture of it. I’d be concerned with any torch damage around a lug hole, and on this one fear that I see a crack. Compounding this he’s asking $175 for it which imho is absurd.
This ebay wheel is one of two styles made by the Budd Company. It has six hand holes and is Budd #71320. The other later variety has three hand holes and is Budd #79120. The below picture is of a set I sold earlier this year. Stu
My Plan. Finally settled in Vegas (up north) & so it's been 3 weeks I gotten to give the M350 some attention. Really it's been in sad shape, but I WILL get it on the road. I'm working the brakes/electrics now & trying to keep the "Old Farm Truck" look/feel. I'll post some pics of what I have been getting into lately:
