I have a 2018 XLT. I got it before Thanksgiving. Today while driving it i noticed numbers for gear that you are in when it shifts. It was on the right side of the screen. I may be crazy but i have not noticed it before. Why did it show up today?
The +/- button is not ONLY for hiding/displaying the gears. Continue to press and you will see the numbers start to disappear. Doing this will allow you to keep the transmission from shifting into higher gears (e.g., if only 1-2-3-4 are displayed, those are the only gears it will be able to shift into).

As I understand it, if you put the shift lever into M, the plus and minus buttons can be used to manually shift the truck also.
If the gears are NOT displayed, hit the "minus" button on the column shifter, and 1-6 will show up. If all 1-6 gears are displayed, hit the "plus" button on the shifter to make them disappear.
Keep hitting the "minus" button to limit the transmission from shifting into higher gears. If 1-3 is the only thing shown, then then transmission will not shift past 3rd gear.
I lock out 6th gear every time I start my truck. 6th is useless to me unless I'm on the interstate, which is rare.

Yes, but that's different from what I described. Using manual mode (mostly) limits you to the single selected gear (unless you're in a higher gear and slow down too much). What I'm talking about is limiting the range within which the transmission will automatically shift.

I knew what you meant, I was just pointing out another facet of these things. Hence the "also".
