Start problems Ford Excursion 6.0l PowerStroke from 2003
we have a problem. Our 2003 Excursion 6.0l Power Stroke starts without any problems since the purchase in the morning. A few days ago he bring us safely 2500 km to our holiday home in spain. But since 2 days he goes out immediately after the start. This happens 2-3 times after that you have the feeling he is shaking properly and then he runs without problems.
If we turn it off after a normal drive and start shopping for example, it starts without problems again. It`s only in the morning like that. We are currently in southern Spain and have no minus temperatures. At night, only the air is a bit wet outside but never below 46 degree F the morning when we drive it is already 59-63 degree F. It can`t be to could, I think.
In Germany when it was very cold maybe 24 degree F and he stands for 2 or 3 days he had the Problem that
he did not want to start. Then I needed 5-6 tries but he did not start only rotated and the 7 times he started.
But I think this is another problem.
Otherwise, he never had problems at normal temperatures.
What we noticed, he is in the last few days sometimes can not open or close with the remote control. The battery is quite new.
Maybe you have an idea what it could be. I am afraid that we drive home and we stop in the night for refuel or sleep and he doesn`t start again.

After that I would want to see what the Injector control pressure reads, the ICP will tell you the health of the high pressure oil system. You will need a program like Forscan to be able to read the ICP if you don’t have a handheld monitoring program like TorquePro for Android.
Would be be good to know last time the fuel filters were changed also.
thank you for your answer! We have the evening before the problem occurred the first time the batteries are disconnected, because we do not get the lamps in the X off. The children had probably adjusted something. The next morning, the problem arose. We will check the battery contacts tomorrow and see if they are dirty. The injectors had already suspected the mechanic in Germany. I think we will change them when we are back in Germany. Unfortunately, I did not know when the fuel filter was changed last time, because we bought the car only 10 weeks ago. But the filters (air filters etc.) look very good.
I will tell you if we find the mistake.
iI think our excursion is crazy. This morning we wanted to disconnect the batteries and test if it starts better then. But before that I tried to start it normally and he started immediately. Unbelievable, I think he wants to annoy us! Because now the remote key does not work anymore. We can only open the car via the number field. I have already read how to learn it again but that does not work. I change the Batterie again but nothing happends. The door look does Not work because nice people want to break it with a screwdriver. And we just have one Remote transmitter.🙈
To start the 6.0 liter requires certain things. You will need something to read the PIDs such as the Torque Pro app or Forescan. Without something like this you are basically guessing. So long as you have the OBDII adapter you can even use your phone. Check your batteries, alternator and make sure the grounds have good connections as well.
Once you have this can you post the following:
IPR percentage
FICM and Cam/Crank syncronisation(each should read "1")
HPOP pressure( should be over 500 psi)
FICM voltage( should be up at 48 volts)
starter should crank over 150 rpm
I am sure others will chime in with additional info soon as well.

The EX starts quite normal but then goes off immediately.
The whole thing is then 4 times so he runs smoothly. Unfortunately, we do not find anyone in Germany who has the right OBDII reader. For our Ford Explorer it was no Problem, but for the Excursion no one had the Right Software.
Which devices do you use? Maybe we can order a device in the US, maybe RockAuto? The problem only exists when the car is cold. As soon as he is warm, he starts immediately and runs quietly.

You need a way to check the things that toolmakerrob posted before. There are several options:
Edge CTS Monitor: https://edgeproducts.com/shop/insight-cts2
Torque Pro app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...orque&hl=en_US
Forscan App: https://forscan.org/home.html
There are others. Amazon is probably the best bet for purchasing a monitor for price and shipping. Torque Pro is what a lot of folks like and they have a list of adapters that work with their app:

You might also take a look at the 6.0 forum, specifically the tech folder for your specific problem. You'll also be able to see what the parameters that you're checking with the monitor are supposed to be:

The Tech folder is here:

Also, you might want to post up your scenario in the 6.0 forum as some of the folks may not see your post here. Lots of very helpful folks over there. Good luck!

thanks for the quick response! The smoke is sometimes greyish but mostly black!
I will look at Amazon for the adapter that works on the APP. Thanks for the good links. The post has just been pushed by the moderators in the 6.0 forum. Thanks for that and many greetings from Germany !!
thanks for your answear! Normaly we live near Köln it about 100 km from us. But the Excursion is now in the south of Spain because we have a Holiday home here. We drive back to Germany at the end of August.
I have have order the ELM327 by Amazon. It should be delivered on next Tuesday.
I hope we find the Problem then.
