My 88 ford F150 is making, here lately, a whining type sound from the engine compartment. The water pump has a couple of years on it and isn't leaking. It almost, by holding your head close to the engine, sounds as if it's coming from the alternator? Is this possible? It's giving off good current.
Also, sometimes when Im driving around, I hear bubbly, crackling noises. If you've ever heard an old water heater that has rust settled in the bottom popping & cracking when it heats up - IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE THAT! What in the world could this be?
Stick the end of a long screw driver on alt, then hold the handle up to your ear. Try this on water pump too. That should let ya know where noise coming from. Alt ,s whine excessively if there,s a bad bearing or a bad diode. Does other noise come from inside cab near heater core area? Sometimes they gurgle when they start to get plugged up from age.
Thanks for the responses. I'll try the screw driver thing. Also, the guy I bought this truck from has had the power steering pump worked on a few times, even replaced it but, it still continues its slow leaking.
The bubbly sound you can hear at times inside the cab while driving but not outside the cab. Heater core had crossed my mind.
Thanks all.
