Anyone got suggestions for the best snow chains out there. Mainly for roads or good tracks but some mud/snow tracks
Hoping not to have to use them but want them as back up
The best chains for ice traction are chains with v-bars. Also chains with cam-locks are better than without as the cam-locks help tighten the chains. Also be sure to install the rubber bands and hook the loose end of the chain so that it's not waving around, which can cause damage. Get them sized specifically to your tire size. You don't want one size fits most...
I bought two sets of Laclede 3228r chains for my stock size tires on my F-350. They didn't fit initially. I had to air down to 40 PSI - from 80 - and put a buttload of leverage on the cam to get it to close. They were very tight but I didn't have a choice.
1. Do not buy from a store that does not allow chains to be returned. O'Reilly Auto Parts is one such store that does NOT allow chains to be returned - even if unused.
2. Always test fit the chains BEFORE you need to use them.
3. Get the tensioners. Even if the tire chain manufacturer says you don't need them, they can still come in handy should the chains be looser than expected.
4. If you are towing, get the heavy duty chains for the rear axle. Otherwise, S-Class chains are probably good enough.
Some chain types go on easier than others. Practice makes perfect.
I just bought a pair of Laclede and did a test fit and they seem pretty good. They were about $150 at Les Schwab but I have 37" tires so the chains are a little more expensive. I was looking at the Pewag heavy duty chains but they wanted $350 for them. I can buy two sets of the Laclede and have chains for all four for less than the one set of the Pewag. I too prefer the chains with the cam tensioners vs the other style. I also use the rubber circle type bungies to keep them nice and snug. Les Schwab allows you to return them if unused but I will be keeping mine regardless.
I had a set from them that would let me go ANYWHERE. We had to use them hill climbing where we were off roading due to afternoon melts and evening re-freezes. If they would handle WOT hill assaults for hours, they should last forever on a road driven vehicle.
