My truck has a single tank. When I fill it the gauge goes from E to F with only 10 gallons.
The gauge doesn't jump, isn't erratic, smoothly goes from E to F.
I'm tempted to just drive it to see how far it will go on empty.
Any ideas?

Some one may have put the fuel pump from the smaller Ford tank in your tank?????? Float level thinks you are empty. Sandy
I may have a similar problem with my new-to-me '95 4WD. It was down to 1/4 tank, yet it only took 8 gallons. After I filled, it, it showed 'full'. I'm going to carefully drive it as low as I dare, then fill it again. I might even drive with a jerry can of gas just to see.
My rear tank is exactly like this but my front tank is accurate. Only thing with mine is I used a tank from an 87 truck to replace the one in my 95 (both diesel so I didn’t change the sender), weird thing is it read right in the 87 but won’t in the 95, everything I can find says they should be the same ohms and should work but it doesn’t work right.
my 88 diesel has been like this since i picked it up with 4 miles on it. i just fill it up when it hits empty. if i was out on a long run, i would fill it up every 250 miles.
Yup- "E" seems to indicate 'less than half' for my trucks, too.
I have run them dry (dual, so pretty low- hassle) and if it reads "E" at 140 miles,
it always makes it to at least 220 before it actually starts to suck air...

If you have a short bed and your one tank is in the rear above the spare it is 18 gallons. If you have the side mount tank it would hold 16 gallons. Sandy
It seems to be pretty typical for the fuel gauges in our trucks be slightly inaccurate. I think this is true of most vehicles, at least that we've had anyway. I'd just be happy the gauge works at all. Seen plenty that don't.
