Hello all, I've got a 1999 F-250 Light Duty, basically the same as an F-150. It has rear drums and front discs. When coming to a stop from about 45 today, My speedometer began jumping all over the place, and my brakes went absolutely haywire! The truck started pulling all over the road pretty bad. It felt to me as if more brake pressure was being applied to some wheels than others. I felt that I almost lost control. For a while now, I've had frequent problems with my speedometer going crazy, gauges and odometer blanking out while driving, etc. I just had my pads and shoes checked (which were all in good shape), rear drums resurfaced, and brake fluid flushed. Everything else checked out fine according to the shop that did it. These symptoms sound like computer issues to me, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot them since there aren't any warning lights coming on. The brakes have been periodically doing this on a much smaller scale for a little while now, but never so severely that I felt I couldn't keep control. How do I go about diagnosing this and finding the cause?
Replaced it today. Five minutes after I got on the road with it the speedometer went to zero and odometer went blank as it usually does. Stays that was for about five seconds and then resumes normal operation. Not really worried about the brake issue as it doesn't happen regularly. Really want to figure out the gauges though.
I wouldn't have a problem replacing the cluster except for the mileage. If I bought a new one at the junkyard wouldn't it show the mileage from the vehicle it came from? How would I sync it to the new one to show the same as the old?
The mileage is stored in the PCM on that vehicle. The cluster odometer display is just a series of lights that displays whatever the PCM tells it to.
Also be aware if you do a junkyard cluster swap, the PATS will need to be reprogrammed. You can do this with free Forscan on a Windows computer with an extended license.
Is there any chance this could be a PCM issue then? When I say my odometer goes blank, all of the digits turn to lines. The display itself doesn't black out. I've already done the solder fix behind the odometer so it hasn't turned off since. Sometimes I also get a momentary check engine light when everything freaks out.
Well then that is a whole different thing. Blank = nothing on it. Dashes are something on it.
Code scan it to see what that tells you. Again, Forscan is free.
I have an Edge Evolution CTS2 which scans for codes. I've scanned multiple times and it comes back with nothing. Check engine light only stays on for a few seconds when it comes on, turns off once the gauges go back to normal
If your device is just a PCM code scanner it is probably not reading codes from every module on the vehicle.
Forscan does.
Unless you have a dealer level IDS subscription service, Forscan is the next best thing.
Alright, didn't know what you meant the first time. Had never heard of Forscan. I'll certainly look into that but I'll have to order an OBD adapter to hook to the laptop. I'll post results when I get through all of that.
You might want to check the ground terminal G108 at the left front rad support, also G200 at lower left kick panel. 2 splices might also cause problems if water got to them, S106 and S208. I don't know where they are but if they run in the sill channel they may have been water corroded.
