2012 Expedition Multiple H02S DTC

Hi everyone. New here and hoping for a little advice.

My wife took her 2012 Expedition (45K miles) in for a smog check the other day. Passed with no issues. 2 days later she calls me saying the Check Engine Light is on. Anyways, put it on the OBD II reader and pull the following codes:
P0053
P0059
P0135
P0141
P0155
P0161

They all are H02S related and since they all popped up at the same time, I am suspecting a fuse/relay and/or wiring fault on the load side of the circuit. The owners manual does not reference a fuse for the circuit. The local dealer service department is backed up until mid Jan, and the vehicle is just eating fuel. Have any of you ran across this? If so, any recommendations?

Thank You in advance!

Tommy

Those codes are all related to the heater circuits of all four O2 sensors.

Check fuse F76 under the hood. However, if that fuse is open, I'd also expect that you'd have a MAF-related fault code. It's certainly possible that the fuse is good and that there's a wire/connector issue "downstream" from where the MAF gets its power of the F76 feed.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked F76. It is good. I went underneath the vehicle and inspected all 4 sensors for evidence of chaffing, overheating, etc. Nothing obvious. I disconnected and reconnected each O2 sensor for fun. I followed the harness cable as far as I could to where I lost it right above the bellhousing. I suspect it crosses over to the passenger side and comes up to the PCM. Looked at the PCM connections, gave them a little push for snugness, nothing out of the ordinary.

Went ahead and put the OBD II reader back on the vehicle, this time only 2 codes. P0135 and P0155. Started the vehicle to read the data. Noticed the Fuel System now running in closed loop. So I cleared the codes from the reader. DTC goes out. Decided to drive it around the block a few times. DTC stays off.

Even though I spent 24 years in the Navy and have seen my fair share of "PFM", I know better.

Could the PCM "hang up"? Or do I have a corroded conductor or connector somewhere that I managed to "wiggle" back into continuity?

I'd suspect the latter.

I've attached three diagrams. Check C146 pin 13 (Green wire). That is the feed for the heaters for the four O2 sensors after the splice that supplies the MAF sensor. That would be my prime suspect for failure. In the schematic, off-page arrows D & F go to the two downstream sensors.

Thank you for the drawings!

I was able to locate C146. When I separated it, I noticed discoloration around both the male and female sides of pin 13. I pulled the conductors out of the loom and they appear to be normal, no evidence of mechanical damage or overheating. Besides pin 13, I did note that the entire connector felt "loose", as it didn't take a lot to actually separate, more or less slid apart.

Think I will probably head on down to Ford to source the connector.

i just created an account to say thank you! I am a Chevy guy (blasphemy) but the family has a 2012 Expedition 5.4. 130,000 miles. Had a MIL recently. Fam took it the local shop and they replaced all 4 O2 sensors. MIL right back on. Wish I had been here to stop that waste of money. Found the Ford TSB 13-5-7 for Expedition and Navigator a few days ago. Inspected connector today. Had discoloration. Also lots of dielectric grease which I bet the shop put there... In their defense, the connector pins did look fine and seems like it would conduct. I pulled both sides of 13 out and still nothing to note. But I bypassed those pins with a splice for the moment. Seems like that fixed. I will replace the entire connector in due time. Just wanted to say thanks for the diagrams. I looked everywhere for C146 and didn’t find it anywhere but here. THANKS!

You'd need to provide the identification of your vehicle and the specific O2 sensors that you're looking for replacement pigtails for.
