I recently purchased a 2018 SCLB super duty. I had an issue where my electronic tailgate would not open due to a seized actuator. While I was speaking with the Ford service Rep, I was told it is an engineered flaw that allows water to get around the actuator and it causes it too freeze.
Apparently it is mainly an issue in cold moist climates, I was wondering if many other people have come across this issue.
What exactly is this, does the actuator slowly lower the tailgate? Is it a high-end feature or is it on the XL/STX trim level trucks...thanks.
It electronically releases the tailgate latch. It doesn't assist in the lowering of the tailgate. That is done by way of an internal torsion spring in the tailgate. The feature is available on the higher-end trucks for the remote tailgate release.

Thank you for your time
Had no problems with mine last winter. Earlier this winter, I made the mistake of draining the last of the water out of our water tank, letting it run over the tailgate while it was open. Very next day, tailgate wouldn't unlock because water had gotten into the actuator and frozen it up. When warm, it works flawlessly. After being in cold, freezes up every time.
I've actually pulled it out and disassembled it. I have it inside the house drying out. I'll take some pics and post them tonight if you'd like? It's a pretty simple device and anybody with any mechanical inclination whatsoever can get in there. If you take the actuator itself apart like I did, just be sure to keep the gear alignment the same.
Follow-on question: anybody know what grease the factory uses inside these things? It's a clear grease, almost like vasoline. Seeing as how it's all plastic, I don't want to put something in there that'd eat it up.
Oh, whoops. Disregard everything I said above - I thought you were talking about just the electronic lock. Not the electronic opening. Sorry about that. I'll still post pics if you want, but it's not the same.
I have been noticing mine sticking lately as well. Only after it's been sitting awhile, once I go back and open it by hand, it will open correctly from the fob repeatedly. Planning on taking it in after the holidays to see what the dealer has to say.
