You know how you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with a weird thought. Well, last night I woke up and started to think about what if computers started to have consciousness and what that would look like or what it would mean. I believe in God but also believe in evolution, so the question is at what point in mankind's journey did they become aware of being. We don't really ascribe consciousness to most "lower" forms of life, but maybe dogs, cats, horses, monkeys etc have some form of awareness of being.
So, what if artificial intelligence becomes aware of being. What would that mean and look like. Think about it, our cars have computers, almost all of us carry around a phone with much more power than the largest computers from 20-30 years ago and it is growing exponentially. Also, most of them now have the ability to be interconnected. Are we looking at Terminator?
Just some goofy thoughts from an old geezer. This is a thing that has puzzled me for a while.
They already have Chat Bots that respond to you. It starts out fun, but the longer I messed with it, the more I became stressed, and almost angry? You can ask questions, answer questions, have a conversation, but unless there is a theme, it starts to repeat itself. After a few times of repeating the answer you begin to get creative, then snarky, then angry. The computer collects every answer you put in, and analyses the data you put in to track the possible answers. Every time you answer a question or ask a question, it's database grows, and it learns to talk more, and communicate with you. It gets a little scary. Its just one step closer to learning to be a "Being"
They have a robot that looks like an oriental woman in a foreign country, Japan, Tokyo, Korea, China, or something like that that has the intelligence to learn to be human. I don't think it will have the ability to feel, or sense, or have human feelings, but I am guessing it won't be long.
If you really want to watch what I think is a fairly realistic interpretation of AI - watch the movie EX-machina-- They make an AI robot that just doesn't care- and that could be a very very big problem for mankind. That was the scariest and most realistic interpretation of AI I have seen. We are a few decades off from a terminator like scenario - but it is possible. The Mormons believe that there will be a 7 year "war" where there will be no food- so they store up food to prep for it. And Buddhist also believe there is something bad coming (someday) and that the "enlightened" will make it through and have peace and prosperity-- Could be predictions of machine take over-- and lets not forget the Matrix :-) I'm not one for professes, but it never hurts to be a little prepared. Both physically- preparatory- and spiritually. :-)
The question with a really smart machine is does it just act based on its programming and learning or does it at some point become aware of what it is and make choices that include "awareness"?
I believe that with each scenario programmed, and 25+ possibilities programmed into a computer, it would be hard to tell the difference, and one might never know if it had awareness or not. Not everyone reacts the same every time, so say it picks one of the 25 reactions that are programmed into it, we may not be able to distinguish if it was a true emotional reaction or a preprogrammed random generated reaction.
A machine is handed a penny, its options are give it back, put it in a pocket, or throw it. Your interpretation, of what this machine does with it, may consider each one of those appropriate. The machine picks a random number, for which there is already software for, assigns each task a different number and uses that number as an answer to select what to do with it.
What you are taking about here Curtis is our interpretation of what the machine is doing. I'm more interested in if there is a point where the machine is aware of what it is doing. At that point, I think it may become really scary for us even if it has been programed to have parameters that limit its responses because at some point it will figure out how to get around the parameters. Just look at what your kids do or how people who are incarcerated find ways around their limitations.
I understand what it is you are saying, but what I was explaining above, is that the machine may make decisions that may make it really hard to tell the difference, given enough programmable options, and learned behavior.
I don't think AI consciousness is a viable option for this generation. for a computer to be fully self aware the calculations will have to reach in the billions if not trillions per second-- we are not there ------- Yet.
