Got a used 10.5 out of an F250 from the junkyard, to replace the D60 in my van. Moving spring perches was not a problem (eventual 4x4 conversion, so the front will be moved to metric before long). But the axle didn't have a pinion yoke/flange on it when I got it. It was from a 99, so it would be yoke. My van has a flange, so I got a flange out of the yard finally to finish this.
I've not setup a diff before, so I'm trying to do this correctly and learn. As I understand it, all I should have to do is properly set the pinion preload. I got the crush sleeve eliminator kit from Yukon gear to replace the crush sleeve. But there aren't instructions to dictate which piece goes which way. I'm assuming the spacers go between the 2 collars, and the larger collar goes towards the flange(forward)? I've also read that I should be aiming for 6-8 in lbs on used bearings, with maybe 200ft lbs on the nut? And that 6-8 is assembled, but no brake drag? Can anyone confirm?
Well I think I may have it figured out. When I tightened it up before, I still have about 1/8 of play. So something wasn't right.
Pulled the carrier out, so I could look at the pinion. The Ford 9" crush sleeve eliminator works, but needs to be reamed out slightly to fit on the small collar. This was why I was getting play. A tad bit of sanding on the one piece of the solid spacer, and it's all good. 2 shims was a bit loose, 1 shim makes it not turn. So I'm in the right area, just need to dial it in slightly.
