Thanks Gashog for clarifying.
So, can it just be "wiped and reloaded", so to speak, and call it a day without replacing the APIM? Or, are dealers inept?
Wiping and reloading can be done but it's not listed as a service function in the service manual. Instead they want you to pull the vehicle as built from the Ford service content website and flash the new module. The DIY way is to use Forscan and make a copy of the original file and simply do a copy and paste and it will re write the module and you can also command a module reset.

One foot closer to buying the equipment to support forscan. The system backup alone would be priceless.
The guy at the Ford dealer was well aware of the issue. He wrote it up and said I would have to bring it back with the black screen before he could do anything. He said as long as it was written up before the end of the warranty it should be covered.
This thing is making me rethink buying the extended warranty. Does anyone have any thoughts the Ford extended warranty?
Like you, I also have a 2016 Lariat with the 502A option package and i`ll be purchasing the Premium Care ESP with the optional lighting coverage. I`m going for the 8 Year 150K plan. Yes, it`s pricey but the peace of mind it gives me for these possible very expensive repairs is worth the cost.
I`m still under the 3/36K warranty with a little over 16K miles or 7 months to go before it expires.
Below is the price for the Premium Care on my 2016 F-150 4WD with 24,500 miles from Lombard Ford with a $50 deductible. Do the prices vary from dealership to dealership such that shopping around makes sense?

Does your vehicle have LED lighting?
Yes, prices do vary from different dealers.
Flood Ford is one of the most popular places for an ESP purchase. I think i`m going with Ziegler. They also sent me a discount code.
I've noticed my Sync 3 has been acting strange since the new update as well. Yesterday while a phone call was coming in the radio turned itself on and then I couldn't answer the call. The nav also has an icon that said no GPS. The "no GPS" thing happens really often now that i've updated.
Ugh. That's some real money for a warranty. I still rack up higher mileage a year, but I'm not sure almost $4,000 is worth it.
If you are a high mileage driver consider the 6 and 7 year ESP. Ford really nails the people that go with the 8y 150k. Going down in years saves substantial money.
