I have a 1987 ford f150 4x4, currently I running 31x11.50x15 interco thornbirds. I am going to put a body lift plus I was going to level the front end.I looked at the 2" leveling spacers and really would rather go with coil springs. My question is instead of going with a 2" coil spring to level could I go with a 4" coil and 2" blocks in the rear. Can I do this without changing the pitman arm and without getting extended radius arms. I am trying to lift for looks right now, I do not plan on doing any major offroading. Plus I'm kinda on a budget and just trying to do as much with what little I have. Any help would be great Thanks.
4 inches, not real sure about an 87 but I'd say yes to return to the normal steering. As for lift blocks, unless you have traction bars forget about it. As you use lift blocks the tires have more leverage on the axel housing to twist it causing axel wrap. This is BAD. It can make things get very expensive. You could go get the Fiestone ride rite air bag helpers in the rear. Around 300-400 bucks. You can adjust the ride height some with air pressure, plus there great for hauling stuff to level out the truck.
Ok so I would probaly be better off just buying a suspension lift kit instead of trying to piece one together. Well so much for lifting it I geuss the body lift and front leveling spacers will have to do.What tire size can I run with just the body lift, also who sells a body lift with bumper brackets, everybody that offers one that I have found does not offer brackets for the 87 model. Thanks
33's with the body lift. 35's if you add the leveling coils. Brackets, try a search. I'm sure it's not to difficult to fabricate some if you have a smidge of talent.
Some maufactuers reccomend slightly longer shocks, but say stock length ones will work. If you have cheap or stock shocks, get new ones. The stockers will not be able to control those big tires. I have Rancho RS5000's and very pleased except for a bit of surface rust.
You need atleast 6" of lift for 35s..preferable more if you off road. Pretty much any 11.5" or wider tire you get is going to rub on the radius arm when you turn the wheel all the way to 1 side. It's pretty much unavoidable but it's not really a big issue.
if you wanted to go with a suspension lift kit i recomend a 6" superlift they are a good lift and they are resonable in price and they come with everything you need except the drop pitman arm the cheapest i found was @ www.ntwonline.com check it out if it intrests you .....just an idea
I put a superlift kit on my other truck and a skyjacker kit on my newer truck and the skyjacker kit was 10 times better/stronger at about the same price.
you have a point mustang they both are excellent lifts as a matter a fact they are made by the same co kind of like fender and squire guitars same co diff name myself i like the superlift because skyjackers a soft-ride lifts too soft of a lift for me dont get me wrong they ride nice and are good lifts but when i lift a truck i may be weird but i like stiff lifts i want to feel every crack in the road or peble on the dirt.....just my preference both good lifts though
I looked on ntwonline and they have a special for the 4" or 6" lift I believe I will go for the 6". But with the radius arm brackets will the tire still rub. It's not that big of a deal if it does.Probaly just go with the brackets for now and then when I finish with some other parts on my thruck opt for the extended radius arms. Thanks alot for all of your advice you have been a real help.
