hi there
i've got a 99 f-150 4.2L with 110 000 kms. over the last few weeks it developed a hesitation and started burning quite a bit of gas. (fuel milage was always real good). today, the service engine light started flashing and the engine started shaking really bad. there's also a faint smell of fuel. anyone here have any ideas as to what's going on. also, if somebody could tell me how to check the codes i'd appreciate it. thank you
Unfortunately unless you buy a scan tool you'll have to take it to get it scanned for codes. Apparently Autozones will do it for free. Until you get it scanned there probably isnt much sense guessing at what the problem is. It's quite likely something as simple as a bad plug or wire. The codes that are retrieved will lead you in the right direction. Make note of the actual code number, not just the description, and we should be able to help figure it out.
