I'm looking at getting some new mud tires for my '92 Bronco. I was wondering how are the BFG mud terrians in rain and snow on the road? Because my dad had some mudders on his truck (don't know what kind) and he said every time it rained it was like driving on ice. Thanks for the help.
I'm on my 2nd set. They do alright in rain, I wouldn't say it's like driving on ice, but they are not the best. The BFG M/T is probably the best all around tire you'll find. It doesn't do excellent in anything, it just does good in everything. There's always a trade off, if you want street manners, you'll loose off road capabilities. They do fine in deep snow, but the slushy stuff it does marginal.
In snow they do find I haven't noticed anything bad in the rain with them it is on the ice that gets them. I have BFG's, but I've heard alot of good things about Good Year MTR's.
I couldn't really figure out what he was exactly trying to say, but they do well on ice because they have a soft compound. They'll do better than the BFG A/T because the A/T's have a harder compound.
I disagree with you Mustang on the BFG M/T's being better than the BFG A/T's on ice because the M/T's aren't siped like the A/T's. We run both A/T's and M/T's at our place. My dad has more traction on ice,(A/T's) but I have more traction in deep snow(M/T's).
BFG muds start out not that bad on ice and rain but the rubber really seems to harden with time, they wear really well for an agressive tire(if alligned well) but they get worse on the road with time. just mine and a friends experience.
Maybe it the cold and salt up here in Canada
What would sipes matter on ice? Sipes help with everything except dry pavement and ice. If it's slushy snow than yes the A/T's will work better. But on just ice, the M/Ts softer compound will stick a little better to the ice than an A/T. In most every aspect, the A/T is better than the M/T in snowy conditions, but not by much.
Hey, all I know is that the A/T's grip better on ice than the M/T's. And sipes do help unless driving on a skating rink because of the frost that forms untop of the ice provides more traction for tires with sipes. Where as M/T's there just big blocks of rubber going on the ice. Snow is a totally different ball game, the tires are fairly even in that aspect.
