The stock Mitsubishi 3.5kw starter is an in-line gear reduction starter, Denso make a 4kw offset gear reduction starter that is about $350 and has become increasingly difficult to find a real one, many crappy Chinese knocksoffs that are anything but an upgrade. Buyer beware.

When it’s time for a new starter, I’ll pony up for the Denso. IMO, there’s times when an upgrade is worth every penny, in this instance this is one of them.
in in the market for a starter for my 2000 X, not really looking for a gear reduction starter tho.
Not sure why not other than cost is more. If you buy a quality one though like the Denso, then you get just as much reliability out of it. No modification needed to the truck, it simply bolts into the same place an OEM style starter does. I did use slightly longer bolts though because the mounting surface of the Denso is much thicker.
Your truck, your money and your choice though.

My truck starts in under a second once I turn the key to start with the Denso, AGM batteries and upgraded wiring. The results are clear.
Not sure why the video didn't embed, trying it again.
I put a gear reduction in 3 months ago or so. I could not wait for the Genuine Denso posted below to ship, nor could I wait for a warranty if there was ever an issue so I went with one of the Chinese versions available at the local stores. So far so good and if I have a problem I can have it swapped that same day. If you can afford some downtime. Go for the original Japanese Denso.
What Jason has said is also true. Some people have had zero problems or regrets about installing the Chinese gear reduction, others have not been so lucky.
