That sure sounds stock allright, lol. Are you over 6' tall (or maybe a little short for your weight?) That'll do it. And before you ask, removing the in-cab fuel tank won't net any more legroom.

hah, I am about 6' tall and very short for my weight. haha Would there be a solution for more room between me and the steering wheel other than a shorter steering column ?
Not familiar with pre-1965 seat configurations, the 65 thru 72 seat tracks are the same but after 66 the seats are wider. I swapped the tracks off of my 65 and installed them on an 86 Lariat bench seat which I would describe as a low profile type and in my case gain approx. 4". The measurement on the back portion of the bench seat from side to side is approx. 58". For info purposes, I believe that from 1967 thru the 90's the bench and backs can be mixed and matched to one preference. Seem to recall pre-65 floor pans are recessed/step up so not clear if later model seats would be an option. perhaps members more knowledgeable can offer comments/suggestions. Another option possibly bucket seats?

I don't believe so, the bench seat is a pretty good arrangement and they are comfortable at least when refurbished. Bucket seats probably make things worse overall as far as steering wheel clearance. There just isn't much room in the cab. Maybe P/S with a modern column would work for you.

Im 6'2", mostly legs. I have the stock bench right now but going for a change. Going to try a late 90's bench. My cab has the tank I it still, however, I put a tilt column in mine and when I did, I put it as close to dash as possible, which made a big difference compared to the original straight column javelin-through-chest it came with. My truck has many upgrades / custom things including power steering, but for sure its a tight fit for tall guys, even with these changes.

I wasn't smart enough to make column changes in advance. So now any changes will have to wait until spring.

You won't gain much by removing the tank because the top of the bench will hit the back of the cab about the same time it contacts the gas tank.
