Lighted Hitch Cover

Sorry if this has been discussed, I did a search but I'm not reading through 100's of pages for a mention of it. Was looking to add a Lighted Hitch cover that would plug into the 4 prong slot on the bumper of my 2017 Lariat. Read reviews of said hitch covers and someone said it makes the truck think a trailer is attached. He said he tried one on his 2015 F-150. Question is can I just select No Trailer Connected from trailer settings or will all the warnings and backup sensors be messed with? Anyone have one in that could shed some light on this? Thanks.

Do you own a trailer or have access to one? Maybe even one of those trailer plug testers? If so plug it in and then choose No Trailer Selected and see what happens. I'm guessing the result would be the same for the lighted cover.

I know a lighted headache rack will make the truck think there’s a trailer behind it if it’s tapped into the trailer circuit. Magnum changed their lighting harness to tap into the truck’s taillight harness and that solved the problem for my headache rack. I would imagine a lighted receiver cover would do the same thing.

I don't think plugging into the 4pin will make it think that, but I could see that plugging into the 7 pin would cause issues

I haven't tried it with my 2017, but in a previous F250 the 4 pin certainly did cause it to "see" a trailer.

I'm sure the 4 pin is connected to trailer wiring, otherwise it would serve no purpose. Might try a trailer tester. I have to find mine.

So you can still do it, you’ll just have to tie into the taillights like my headache rack does. It’s tapped into a connector that’s mounted on the inside of the passenger frame rail next to the spare tire. You could add a secondary 4 pin and tie it in there. It’s just a couple feet away from the back bumper so easy access.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm not tapping into anything electrical on this truck. I'm not good at fixing things...But I'm an expert at messing things up.

That’s too bad. I was really looking forward to seeing this on your truck!
