1948 Ford Bed install ??
1. I see some beds utilize different amount of strips between planks. Regardless do most folks actually bolt them into the crossmembers or just attach with a washer and bolt on the bottom sides of the boards?
2. I have the pic attached that looks like they use the firring strips to level the boards. I assume this makes it a hell of a lot easier to level with that awkward hump on the sides. I only see the downside of a small lip in the back of the bed to accomodate the extra height? Anyone try this method?
3. I see some beds that have the bed attached to the frame with the 8 bolts that go thru the boards, others are smooth, how would you attached to the frame without those 8 bolts?
4. I am looking to purchase a bed from a member, and also a friend of mine has offered me some hickory. He says that he would use 10 coats of teak oil and let it be. Is this a decent wood for a bed? Is teak oil enough? thanks. I am still trying to piece together what holds those strips, the bed, etc...sorry for dumb questions. lol
That last bed pic is actually from our truck. We bought the bed kit from Midwest Early Ford.
If I had it to do over again I wouldn't get those painted strips - just too easy to scrape them up.
I don't like bling but in this case I'd get the stainless strips.
It's been a while since we did this. I remember it being pretty tricky to go around
that half circle bit on the side. We used a quarter round type piece to cover our
mitering on those side pieces.
We used a Boat gas tank flap for our fuel "door". I think we got it at West Marine.
I believe all of our boards are just held in place on the bottom with a washer & nut.
I'll double check tomorrow as I have it up in Waco at my son's place.
Good luck over there in Yakima!
