well i took my wood bed out ,, it was plywood, looked pretty good i guess .. i did learn that the SS strips dont hold the bed down ,, there is 4 other bolts that do the strips just hold the boards together ,, i am going back with walnut plywood its 48 in wide and the bed is 48 1/2 wide , so i have 2 pieces of SS angle that i am going to add an each side and at the back ,, i got a 20 foot piece of 3/4 x3/4 x1/8 SS angle for 50 bucks ,, i'll post some pics later ,, but i am happy that my frame is in great shape ,,
My bed was plywood as well. I cut it into 3 pieces, using 2 of the bed strips to fill the gaps just above the frame. Those 2 cuts, and the strips, made the 48" plywood exactly the right width. It actually worked pretty well.
I don't have a picture of it all together, but here is a picture of the 2 side pieces in as I was taking it apart:
I did mine like this....bad pic but i just took it to remember which way i had the angle turned on each row because i took it apart. I did mine like this and used 4 bolts on the outside SS strips to anchor it down. I'm constantly taking things apart and I knew this bed would come in and out a few more times so 4 bolts and its done. Now I can remove those 4 bolts and lift it out as a unit....have been thinking about hinging it on the front so i can just lift it up in the back.
Word of advise...DO NOT think the boards will stay flat without the angle strips to hold it that way. I walked off and left mine and went inside for a little while and came back out and the wood was curving into a circle....duh. Should have known the way it was bolted that it would do that.
SOMEWHERE ON HERE there is a thread on plywood as bedwood.
and the consensus is that it will delaminate... whether it is treated or not... you just can't seal the edges good enough to keep the water out... or at lease that's what I remember them saying...
Well i got mine as a gift i will use it untill it comes apart and then i,ll redo it with real wood, its looks great i have 4 coats on each side 1 side i used sikkens and the other i used min wax poly both in gloss, ,,
On mine i am going to screw mine down to the cross members under the SS strips, so you wont see them after i do them with SS bolts, , really the SS strips are only for looks, its walnut plywood its looks great, ,, the SS angle is for the edge on the sides because the plyood is 48 inchsand the bed is 48 1/2 inches, its just to hide the gaps there i could cut it and sperate it a little, , i dont know, i hate to cut it you know
