Do Throttle Body Spacers Work?

Hi Guys!

Well I took it upon myself to test yet another controversial bolt on performance mod: the infamous throttle body spacer! The spacer being tested in this video is an Airaid - Poweraid throttle body spacer. The packaging promises torque, better throttle response, etc....blah blah blah. Anyhow, I got tired of people arguing over whether these spacers actually work. So I spent my hard earned dollars to finally separate fact from fiction. I don't want to spoil the video, BUT.....I can tell you it made +4 torque at the wheels. Check out the results in the video below! Enjoy!

1hp isn't enough of a difference to account for random variation in dyno pulls so safe to say it's a waste of money.

+/- 5 HP and TQ is margin of error.

My thoughts exactly! I just want to clear this up once and for all.

I think the air raid isn't the best tb spacer, you should try each brand. Also try stacking them, don't be afraid to try 4 or 5.

That could be true. If there is a brand that claims to be better, I'll be happy to test it. However, a brand comparison would have to be a little bit farther down the road. Overall, I think the spacer concept is flawed especially with at a price of $150. If the spacer cost $25 maybe even $50, I would find the results more reasonable. Now, stacking two or more of these would cost $300+. In that price range, there are a bunch of other well proven options for making hp.

I will also add, that the spacer causes fluctuation in engine idle and after a fill up today, my usual 12.3 mpg dropped to 11.2.

While a throttle body spacer may not work I will mention that one thing I did to my truck that while it's not a performance mod it keeps the throttle body cleaner. I installed a oil catch can on my 4.9l after I had pulled off the throttle body intake and saw how gunked up the inside of it and the throttle body valve were.

I put in a new PCV gasket, PCV valve, catch can ,and bought extra hose (enough to locate the catch can for easy emptying) and some hose clamps to fit everything. Before I installed the catch can I got sea foam in a spray can and with the engine running blasted the inside of the throttle body and cleaned the TBI valve really well. Replace the TBI gasket then installed the catch can and parts.
It catches all the oil vapor and water vapor that comes from the engine and WAS coating the inside of the throttle body gunking it up. Depending on the humidity levels determines how often i empty it. I have never had more than a few ounces of oil/water in it at any time, I check it every time I check the oil in the truck and empty it as needed.

So, the catch can installs between the PCV valve and the intake? Do you have a picture or a link to the one you're running?

I did something similar but on the oil vent side. I noticed the tube running from the valve cover to the intake pipe was depositing oil in my TB. So I cleaned the TB out and put a air oil separator in that tube. Now my TB is much cleaner! I actually have a video of the install on my channel. Just look for oil catch can install.
