I am doing a full restoration on my 1966 F250 300 inline six. motor is all ready and i have installed a new wiring kit. when i turn my key to the On position, the motor turns and turns. the starter should not be engaged until i turn the key to Start. why is this happening? My new ignition switch from LMC has 3 wires in the back - 10 gauge yellow meant for the red lead from the starter solenoid, right? then i have 2 other wires - one red w/ a green stripe and the other red w/ a blue stripe. I had a 10 gauge Ignition Start wire from my wiring kit connected to the red/blue wire. then i had the ignition coil wire connected to red/green. this seems super simple, what the hell am i doing wrong??? i even tried swapping wires around and got the same results (until i really screwed up and put the engine ignition start wire to my yellow ignition switch wire. that caused a big spark and flash at my positive battery terminal that fried off a corner of the battery post. won't do that again....
anybody got how to get this remarkably simple and stupid thing i am doing wrong fixed?? i am attaching a photo of my ignition switch and a photo of my factory manual that shows the wiring diagram of the ignition switch.
Is this kit a factory reproduction harness or just an aftermarket kit? If it is aftermarket you will probably have to talk with the folks who made it. If it is factory it should be just plug and play. First thing I would do is try the old switch. The first made in china POS switch I got broke after two starts so I picked the best one I had from a parts truck and it is working fine.
Ford replaced the original 1961/66 ignition switch (C3AZ-11572-A) in 1967. This new switch (C7UZ-11572-A) has an extra terminal that the original did not have.
Hey 1966F250, did you get that ignition switch problem sorted out? I put a switch from Dennis Carpenter in my 66F100 a short time back and may be able to help.
