Anybody got thoughts on a particular tow strap they just can’t live without? Need a new one and have not looked in 10+ years so not sure if there might be anything new I need to look for.
ARB or Pro Comp or any other brand. 20 ft long, 20,000 lb rating. Keep it dry and clean. Mine gets used every winter, if not for me, to rescue someone else.
VooDoo or Bubba ropes for vehicle recovery. I'll keep a tree saver strap in my kit as well for vehicles that lack proper tow hooks so I can form a "noose" around the frame or axle, along with some shackles.
I don't have a brand preference but I keep a 30ft long 20K lb rated strap in the truck along with a D ring/shackle to be sure I can connect it to anybody's vehicle. That's all I thought I needed until I tried to pull the wife's car. Having the common plastic molded front and rear bumpers it didn't have anywhere to connect my strap. Turns out it needs a set of J hooks to connect to the unibody underneath the car.
NEVER, ever, use a strap with a metal hook on the end -- it's a great way to get someone killed. D-rings are the way to go but only really work if you (and/or the other vehicle) have a bumper that has tabs on it. A hitch pin will work for the receiver hitch and you can just loop it through the factory rings on the front.

Yup - being a 4x4 guy I always have recovery gear and multiple sizes for shackles for recovery. Always hook to something sturdy and never use a strap with sewn on hooks, those are full towing things around, not pulling for recovery.
It doesn't matter who you buy them from as long as they are properly rated. I typically run a 2.5-3" strap in the 25-30k range and rarely break them. I've had really nice straps and cheap straps I've gotten from Amazon, the only thing that kills them is abrasion and stupid attachment points.
I always try dead pulling first, tighten strap and try pulling. If that doesn't work you progressively take loner and longer runs at it to get the elastic properties of the strap to pull the vehicle out, or rip **** off.
Whatever you do, stay out of the path the strap or parts will take and be smart about it. For out trucks a 2.5-3" 20 or 30 footer will suffice for most recoveries. I would loop the strap around the front hook and use a shackle to another hook or through a hitch pin on the other vehicle.
