I'm getting ready to put my 72 ranger back together and we got a carburated 1989 351w to go under the hood. I was wondering if I should stick with the Motorcraft ignition box or if theres a plug-in after market one that you guys would recommend for it. Thanks-Ryan
An '89 eh? Which distributor are you running? Assume you've changed out the original TFI distributor (needs a computer to run) for an earlier style?
The only way the existing ignition box will work is with another Dura Spark distributor. Was that your thread with a similar (or the same?) title from last month? If so, sorry I don't remember exactly what engine or distributor you had in there.
I believe the '89 truck engine was still using a flat-tappet cam as opposed to the later roller type cam? If so you don't have to worry about special gear material as long as you have an older distributor with cast iron gear. But that IS a thing to pick the right distributor for the cam type.
Anyway, to your actual question, sorry I don't know what ignition control box to recommend at this point.
But someone will have done what you're doing, so might have some good insight and experience.
