I'm getting a 300 straight six jasper engine.mine has lost compression in the front cylinder.ive been told to use oil with zddp.do I use this with every oil change
Yes you need an oil with at least 1000PPM or more of ZDDP and phosphorus this is to keep the cam from wiping it;s self out.
Good options are Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck
Shell Rotella T4
Shell Rotella T6 Diesel (Not the multi vehicle)
I've ran regular chevron supreme 10-40 since I built the engine about 75k miles ago. No additives, no diesel oil, no racing oil, just regular off the shelf 10-40. Change it every 5k or thereabouts.
No problems at all.
I don't believe in zinc. It's not what protects things... old engines running old oil were lucky to make it 150-200k miles without being completely worn out. Today, that's half of a normal life for most vehicles.
I copied this over from Mobil 1's q and a section...
“For an older, flat tappet, performance motor with inherent cam wear issues is there any benefit to mixing high ZDDP Mobil 1 Racing™ 4T 10W-40 to Mobil 1™ High Mileage 0W-30 oil? The 15W-50 creates TOO MUCH oil pressure. It would be nice if you had a product for 'Classic' cars, high ZDDP, 0W-30 and 0W-40. I have used nothing but Mobil 1™ for 15+ years.”
Answer: Mobil 1™ FS 0W-40 already contains a higher level of ZDDP (1,000 ppm) that could benefit your flat tappet engine. We also have a Mobil 1™ High Mileage 10W-40 (1,000 ppm); see our table listing the phosphorous levels for all Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oils.
So, if Mobil thinks a flat tappet engine needs ZDDP, it probably does.
