My girlfriend and I were just about home (about a mile away) this evening when we were passing a gas station on our right and another pickup truck pulls out from the gas station on my right at a good speed and clips (t-bones) my right rear quarter panel, bumper, taillight and heavily damages my rear wheel and hubcap. I gained control of my truck from the impact to look to our left to see the truck that hit us speeding off. I pulled into that gas station, my girlfriend called 911 and the police arrived to take my statement and give me the case number for the police report. A Hit and Run. Prior to the police arriving I went in to the little mini mart of the gas station and said to the clerk I was just hit by said truck and he said that guy was just in there and was potentially impaired. The cops reviewed the tape footage and have somewhat of a description of the truck but may or may not have gotten the licence plate number. I'm pissed.
I drove slowly home and parked the truck.
So about two hours after the accident my girlfriend drives me in her car to the gas station where this happened and I speak to the clerk who shows me a cell phone picture of a drivers license he took of the kid that was the passenger in the vehicle who hit me....apparently he came back into the store after the incident and before I got up there and somehow let the clerk take his licence and photograph it. The clerk said he gave this information to the police, so I'm hoping they squeeze him for the driver's name.
So tomorrow I have to view in the daylight the extent of the damage I can visibly see (I hope there is not any internal or more serious damage that can't be seen); I hope it's all fixable and there are no lingering problems due to this. Unfortunately, I'm liable for the deductible from my insurance company if the police do not catch this piece of sh%t.
This is my first ever accident in 38 years of driving.
No news from the police at all.
So this morning, my girlfriend and I decide to go see where the passenger in the truck that hit us lives to see if the driver might live close to him. When we were younger, kids within their neighborhood would hang together. So we drive around, and alas, I see the white dually (2005 Chevy Silverado 3500) that struck us parked in a driveway not two streets over from the passenger's street. We take pics of the house#, that truck and the street name.
So we have some errands to run, and a little later this afternoon I drive by the gas station where the incident happened, enroute to the police station, to show them my pics, and I see the same truck from my earlier pics parked there. Holy cow, what are the chances a dimwit would return to the scene of the crime, with same vehicle, and apparently leave his truck there and hop into another car and leave?
Ironically, an officer pulls in, I get his attention and explain what had happened last night and today and initially he wasn't sold on my story. He gets out and starts his poking around and then goes and views footage from the gas station from last night and comes out and says 'yes', it is the same vehicle. Wow, my girlfriend and I did some good detective work to get to this point.
Guy finally comes back to his truck, officer starts his questioning, and the guy admits he hit me, and admits he took off after. Officer logs all his information and tells me guy has valid insurance, so that will help with my insurance company against theirs in getting my truck repaired.
I suspect a warrant will be issued for his arrest within a few days for evading (Hit and Run).
Oh I don't know. Something about aggravated hit-and-run, and attempting to flee a crime scene. Admitting to all of the above right then and there. Stuff like that. No biggie.

No such thing. What crime ? This kind of thing happens every day. It's a few motor vehicle tickets and that is it.
It is only a crime is someone is hurt/killed in the course of the hit and run.
The OP doesn't say where he's from. Things vary state to state.
I was once hit head on on a city street. Did over $3k in damages to the F150 I owned at the time. Other driver was at fault and ticketed. Through the subrogation process where my insurance company went after his to recoup what they paid out for my loss, they also got my deductible back for me.
Our local DA's office also has a victim assistance program. They called me several weeks later to tell me that they had also gotten my $500 deductible money from this guy when he appeared in court. I refused the money and told them that my insurance company had already taken care of that, as I didn't want to get in trouble for double dipping and get called on it at some point in the future.
The OP may want to look into the scenarios I just mentioned. I live in NY state where it's no fault. Which basically means that in a loss situation, your insurance pays for your damage and the other guy's pays for his. But as stated they often go after each other in court to recover the payout from the at fault party. But that really has nothing to do with the policyholder.
