I have a 78 F250 4x4 with 460 and C6 transmission. Mechanic put in a rebuilt transmission and now when we shift from park to R, N, D, etc, the transmission is not going into the corresponding gear. It skips around like the shift linkage rod is mispalaced. PO modified the rod, as you can see by the weld marks and janky bends. Can I simply replace the rod, or do you see anything in the pictures below that is off? Any idea what parts I need and where to source? Thanks in advance for any input.
Good question. The PO did the swap and we rebuilt the C6 that was in it. Not sure what the donor vehicle was.
On the left side of the case is the manual control selector lever that the shift rod from the column attaches to. This lever must be from a truck, because the car lever will not work properly.
These levers are also specific to certain years.
When you swap parts around, you should know what the parts came from.
Sooner or later you'll need to replace something...so you'll need to know what year/model vehicle it came from. Otherwise, you'll be up **** creek without a paddle.

Haha, yes, that’s exactly the creek I’m in now! The truck was purchased in 2000, and the previous owner that did all the swapping is no where to be found.
Looks like this linkage was put together wrong, and some home made pieces added. Should look like this:
This is super helpful. I was looking all over for a schematic and this is perfect. It looks like the linkage was put back together all wrong when the transmission was dropped back in. This gives me a good starting point. Thanks!

Note: 1978/79 .. the NSS is located on the left side of the case on the manual control selector lever, not on the steering column!
