Smoke

1979 F-150 4x4 with 300 -6 cyl
Battery was dead
Tried to boost it off my pickup.
Sparked like cables were on wrong but they weren't so I clipped them on.
Smoke started barreling out of solenoid on fender well beside the battery?

You have a short there somewhere. Inspect all the wiring from battery to solenoid and after it.

Starter could be buggered. If sparks are flying like a welder then you.may have a shorted starter .

Regarding the battery, I have seen sparking when attaching cables to a battery that was very low on charge.
Regarding the first solenoid: How old was it and how much use did you get out of it? Sometimes the connections on the inside either get worn or break, either leaving a gap for the connection or actually shorting. This may cause smoke.
Regarding the second solenoid, since you were able to jump it to work, I would check the wire going to the S pole. Do you have voltage there when you turn the key?
