Driveshaft dilema

Got an 86 F150 4x4 6cyl 4 spd It is a basketcase, and I have been digging around trying to find out what I have, and what I need. She has a NP435 tranny and NP208F transfer case. But, I am missing the rear drive shaft, and whatever part goes into the back of the xfer case, and connects the drive shaft. Would I have to find the exact same set up, in a JY, or would a 4x4 with an automatic still work? Mostly concerned with drive shaft length.

You are going to need the correct shaft. The first thing you need to determine is what type of output your transfer case is using. It can be a slip joint or a fixed yoke output.

Fixed yoke is going to look like the picture below. If you have this type, the u-joint on the shaft fits right inside the fixed yoke with u-bolts, and the rear driveshaft will have a splined slip joint made into it.

Here is a picture of a slip joint type of output. This is just like a 2wd automatic would hook up, but it's in the transfer case.

One of these is on the driveshaft and slips up inside the transfer case.

I think 133 in wheel base is a regular cab 8 ft bed. You also need to know the type of rearend you have in it. I am going to pick a 8.8. Here are the hits for a 133" WB, MT 4x4 slip yoke joint with non-removeable carrier.

Looks like Rolla might have what I need. What is a non-removable carrier?

Non-removeable carrier is the Ford 8.8 rearend. It has the cover on back with bolts showing.

The removeable carrier is the Ford 9 inch rear end. That is the one that is smooth on the back with no cover, no bolts. The bolts are on the front, you pull the axles, take the driveshaft off and take all the bolts out of the front and the complete guts (carrier) comes out of the front, with the housing still in the truck.

Thank you, sir. I knew what a 9" was, after looking at them for years, but all that other info is completely new, to me! This truck is going to be quite a learning experience! I have already learned more about hydraulic clutches than I ever wanted too.
