AUH w/ 18'F350

I am buying my first 5th wheel next week and after researching am pretty much set on the Anderson Ultimate Hitch. I was wondering if anyone on this forum has a similar set up. Any advise or concerns?

- 2018 F350 SRW CCSB 6.7 Platinum FX4 w/gooseneck prep, also have Retrax PRO bedcover
- Anderson Aluminum Ultimate 5th wheel Hitch - Gooseneck version
- Cougar HT 30RLS (Unloaded hitch weight 1,545 lbs.)

You will love the AUH. My truck is a LOT older, but you won't have any problems with your choice !

I use an AUH with my set up below and a B&W turnover ball and really like it. Being only 35 pounds, it's very easy for one person to install/remove. My pin weight is closer to 3k, and it's worked perfectly. One tip, consider installing the red pin adapter reversed (ball behind the pin). This moves the trailer forward a few inches into the bed, thus giving you more bed rail clearance, especially with a roll up bed cover. I have a Roll n Lock, and have plenty of clearance. I can still turn about 80* before getting close to the cab.

On a short bed this is a must. If you do not reverse the adapter (like the manual says for a short bed) you will hit the rails. My retrax's cover rails stick up about 3/4" from the factory bed rails and I killed mine the first time out. I posted a picture on here somewhere. Luckily I did not damage the truck rails. This was with between 6-7" clearance. Since reversing the adapter I have had no issues.

I think the advice above is suitable for an extended pin box, but not for the short pin boxes on larger RVs. I have an extended pin box and did reverse the adapter to prevent rail damage in turns.

I have a 2017 CC LB. The only issue I had was the pin box hitting my Retrax pro rail on a sharp turn.

I also run with reversed coupler on my Short Bed towing a Grand Design Reflection so that pin box doesn’t hit bed rails.

Thank you all for the responses. Do you all place anything between the hitch and bed of the truck? I think I read somewhere that some place a rubber mat between the two. I do have a spray in liner

My AUH goes directly on top of the Ford sprayed in liner.

I have a very thin, less than 1/8”, rubber mat that I put under the AUH so I don’t run the chance of damaging the liner. I cut out the GN hole and tighten it down to 60 lbs on Anderson’s recommendation.

I have a bed mat. If I recall correctly they recommend less than 1/2" thick mat. If you have a newer superduty and do not use a mat Andersen has a shorter tube that connects to the goose ball. With the stock one there "may" be some movement. They sent me one for free when I called about some issues I was having but it did not fit with my mat. My issue turned out to be something else.

I have Line-X with a Rough Country rubber bed mat over that. The AUH fits nice and snug when torqued down and doesn't rub right on the Line-X or bed.

I am also wanting to try an AHU but don't know if it will work with the Jayco Pinnacle 36FBTS we are getting. 2019 F350 CCSB SRW cab clearance while turning since the 5er is a wide body at 102" and cap design. My best guess is to use my friends B&W manual slider (226 #s) and take the truck/5th wheel to etrailer that is about 40-50 miles away to let me try the AHU out...if it doesn't work I will probably go with a Demco auto slider, but dang those things are heavy 220+ #s...vs the AHU, with the complete system less than 50...

Since that is probably not an extended pin box, you should install the pin adapter with the socket in front of the pin and that will move the fiver about 8" further back than having the socket behind the pin. Test turning both forward and backing with a spotter.
