so I think I have the dreaded GEM failure, it all started with my door ajar light and dome light staying on, then the seatbelt light would flash, so I took the fuse box out and gem out cleaned fuse box best I could with contact cleaner and inspected the gem for visible damage, none seem to the naked eye. Put it all back together and things worked great. Fast forward three months and now I’m having issues again.. it started first when i would go from reverse to drive I would get a ding like the door opened real quick, then the seat belt light would do the weird chime while buckled and then finally the door ajar light issue came back for a few days. Then all that corrected itself but I was left with my windshield wipers that would stay on when the truck was on, the wipers shut off when I turn off the ignition but don’t park, but will run continuously when the key is on. Last night I decided to disassemble the fuse box from instructions I found here on the forum, I was expecting to see a lot of corrosion, but it was minimal, needless to say I cleaned off all the metal trays and completely rid the fuse box of any corrosion that was present, installed it all back and the wipers are still staying on. This morning I took off the multi function switch and completely cleaned and re assembled. Wipers still constantly on. I think the only thing left is either the Gem or the wiper motor. Although the wiper motor is fairly inexpensive I’m hesitant on just replacing it based on the other electrical issues I have been dealing with. Second question my truck is a 01 f250 4x4 with ESOF I currently don’t think I have RKE since I can’t get it to enter the program mode. I was reading online, and it appears RKE is controlled by the GEM is this true? And if so if I do have to replace the GEM can I replace with a GEM that has RKE and program some remotes? Also any insight on where to purchase a GEM module? Thank you guys for your help!
When you took your GEM Module out, did you see any water? Make sure your windshield or cab clearance lights aren't leaking water. If they are, fix them first. I don't think your windshield wiper motor is just coming on by itself for no reason. I don't know if it's true, but I heard they don't make that module anymore. So you might have to try salvage yards, Ebay, or someone parting out a truck. There are several different GEM Modules for each year. I would think there is more to keyless entry than just the GEM Module, but I'm not an expert. I would replace it with the same thing if it were me. Call the dealership parts department and see what you can find out. I'm interested to hear what they say because I have the same year.
Ok so this morning when left for work, not only was my windshield wipers stuck on but now my windows wouldn't roll down. Call my local ford dealership and they pretty much said good luck try ebay or salvage yard, I called a few other dealerships and they all said it was a obsolete part and good luck. All of the dealerships also couldn't tell me any information on which gems were compatible, they all said they had to match exactly. I called all over town finally found a salvage yard that had one, everything matched except the last letter my gem ended in DB and this one ended in DC but I am inpatient went and picked it up $150 with the fuse box slapped it in and now everything works again like it should! I guess I should have replaced that thing months ago! Happy its all working! I hope it lasts! To answer your question brd7666 when i took the gem and fuse box out originally I didn't notice much evidence of new water. I have some rust on the ebrake and my guess is it leaked in its earlier life but was corrected with a windshield. I have checked it for leaks and i dont find any. I will definatly keep a close eye on it though because these electrical issues are a major pain and frustrating.
