The survivalist movement and others who accept mythological belief systems are neutralized and lead lives without much meaning. When you accept an idea which is false. That means TSHTF (The xxxx Hitting The Fan), or the Second Coming, or a natural disaster melting ice caps and flooding New York City, etc.

In the models I have read, the greatest losses appeared to be in terms of technology. That what we rely on is swept away instantly as soon as Hoover Dam is cracked and there is no more maintenance of telephone poles...
The fine issue seems to be how is the legacy of technology carried forward until things come back online again (if ever).
WHAT DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DO? And how can you pass it on...
NOT: How can I kill sumpin' ta EATS?
Where am I going to get power and fuel from?
Does anyone know how to make BEER?
My wife sez she ain't doin' another dang thing until the dishwasher is runnin'...
And so on.
I see a post-apocalypse USA as being a hybrid of how things were done a hundred years ago, and geeks trying to rebuild everything we HAD. And I have no doubt it would be nation-wide!
I also think that Joe citizen would exercise the opportunity to rid the nation of useless individuals (however that may be locally defined) rather than care for people in jails.
And I think there would be a lot we would regret later.
Country folks can survive, it is true.
Country folks who are technologically advanced (without forgetting their roots) and who maintain libraries are in even better shape.

When things get tough people tend to pull together. Diastaster tends to bring out something good in most people. Oh sure the inner city looting and stuff would happen but these areas would have a self cleaning affect I think, once all the bottom feeders only have each other left to feed on. One thing is for sure, the vakues and prioritys we have today would be gone and replaced with something of greater substance. Planning ahead is always good, but the hoarding and bunker mentality people will be among the first to disappear or change.

Doesn't sound like you read much science fiction as a kid. Those fantasy stories about going to the moon and wireless communication.
The issue is always food. When the strongest in the inner cities and suburbia deplete those food stores, they move in massive hoards to search for food (and beer). 'Country folks' are always the first to go because they generally live in food producing and storage areas, with the strongest country folks joining the hoard. High elevation mountainous areas with limited access are considered the safest, but as the hoard shrinks from self-destruction the strongest and brightest survivors quickly figure out how to obtain those food and beer supplies. A limited number of citizens have been able to hide from the hoards and after the hoards have all destroyed each other they begin the new society as hunters and gatherers. All is well until they see the boats with crosses on the sails and priests standing on the foredecks holding large strands of beads approaching from Europe. Sleep well.
Anybody ever read Josephus' account of the temple in Jeruselum when it fell to the Romans. Seperate factions quarreling amongst them selves was actually the reason for all the people perishing. The Romans offered to spare any and all who surrendered. There are storys of women eating their own babies. It is an interesting srudy on how people act when locked in their own city with no outside resources.
