I have an 86 F-150 with a 302 FI. I recently had muffler shop install a single in/out flowmaster 40 series muffler (with the exit behind the rear tire). This combo did not give me the exhuast tone I was expecting (deep/rumble).
If I cut the tail pipe off and run a short turn down pipe out of the back of the muffler, will this make it louder/deeper. Will it sound good? Will it cause any power/torque loss.
if you want the rumble take off the cat or cats if it has 2. i had a 90 model with a dual outlet flow and it had 2 cats . it sounded like the stock exhaust.
no, cutting to exhaust pipe isn't going to make it any louder. You need to ditch the cat or get duals or a y pipe. Or you could get a good exhaust tip.
Thanks for the help everyone. I have already ditched the cats, so I think I will invest in a good exhaust tip such as the MEG "echo" style tip from Jegs.
If you wanna great sound run straight 3'' pipes going to an 8'' stainless steel tube ( can be metal) with inlets an outlets welded on .....oh what a SOUND!!!!!!
most of the time you want to put the muffler as close as you can to the manifold as you can. then the longer the pipe after the muffler, the deeper it sounds. thats how it works on my 80 f150. but i dont have a cat either.
The more pipe behind the muffler the more the muffler works. Had a glass pack on my 79 302 w/ no cats. Sounded like a straight pipe, so I put on some pipe behind the glass pack and ran it in front of the back axle and it quieted it down quite a bit. And for the guy above w/ the stainless idea, he's right it's good sounding only you don't need to have it 8in. just get about 4 foot or more of 3 in. pipe and it while give any engine a snap with a straight pipe anyway, not sure w/ mufflers. I have stainless straight pipe on 3 of my tractors 2 of them a 4 cyl. gases(H and M Farmall) and the other a 6 cyl. diesel(460 Farmall), I had a straight on the diesel already, but this made it louder and snappyer yet.
Thanks for the good advice The next time I purchase a new exhaust system, I will be sure to put the mufflers closer to the manifold and run more pipe after the muffler not before.
