Easy pre-oiling a flathead

My 8 cylinder flathead is a new build that has sat unfired for 7 or 8 years. When I hooked up an external oil gauge and spun it with the starter I didn't get any pressure after a minute or two. I decided I would try to pre-oil it through the oil pressure port. I looked around the shop intending to build a pressure vessel as I have seen done here, but I spied the little pump gadget I picked up at Wal-Mart for servicing the lower unit on the boat motor. I unscrewed the gauge from the pressure line and found the plastic fitting for the lower unit screwed right in. I screwed the pump unit to a quart of oil and pumped a quart in about 3 minutes. 40 PSI when a tried it again.

That's a clever way to do it, but I have to wonder if you can build any pressure with that pump. That would for sure prime the oil pump, so subsequently spinning the engine with the starter would build full pressure. Be sure to take the plugs out when spinning it, and probably want to put some oil in each cylinder if it's been sitting that long.

You can build enough pressure to force the plastic line off the pump. I'm not sure it's enough to fill all the oil passages, but way more than gravity feed. Main thing is easy.

I missed that last part of your first post where you said you got 40 psi cranking it. You should be good to go now! Are you close to firing it up?

Getting close. I have been building the wiring harness. Still a ways to go, but the essential pieces are done. Getting the distributor and plug wires set and fueling are next.
