I will have to find out. I don't think it has the axle tag anymore.
Interesting so someone still replaced the studs on the Dana 61 rear axle. Is that something they could have done or would the entire axle hub have been replaced? Who the hell knows?
Also sorry to hear! Stay safe out there, I've got a little bit of the fire on the news but hadn't heard too much. Right now we are in the 20s and 10s. Hope the fire stays away from you!
We could use cold weather here, rain would be nice, but hell...I'd even settle for snow, but it hasn't snowed here since Truman was prez.
My sister lives in Agoura Hills, which is about 10 miles away (south east) as the crow flies.
She said come over if the fire gets too close, but several hours later, she had to evacuate, spent the night in her car in a hotel parking lot.
There's no room at the inn, the closest hotel/motel that has any is over 100 miles away!
Sorry to hear about the family and fires. Hope you and your sister can stay out of the fires path! Or I guess better put hopefully the fire doesn't decide to head towards you guys
Also thanks to everyone else who chimed in. I appreciate it and glad to have some answers!
Hey Numberdummy one more unrelated question. Do you have a part number for the correct fan shroud. 74 F250 360
TWO different fan shrouds, both are repro'd by Carpenter. Specs and Ford part numbers listed in his 1967/79 truck catalog.
C7TZ-8146-B .. Fan Shroud-Use with Super Cooling Radiator (has a larger opening radius) / Marked on upper left corner: C7TA-H or D2TA-HA or D3TA-JA
1967 F100/350 352; 1968/76 F100/350 360/390.
------------------------------------------------------- D3TZ-8146-C (replaced C8TZ-8146-K) .. Fan Shroud-Use with Standard, Xtra Cooling and A-C radiators / Marked on upper left corner: C8TA-S or D3TA-DA
1968/76 F100/350 360/390.
Note: Not only are the shrouds and radiators different, but so are the radiator supports.
Super cooling radiator measures approx. 26 1/4" wide x 24 11/16" high. The other radiators are roughly the same width, but are approx. 19 3/4" high.
So is this the difference between core supports or is this just a difference in years.
My support is the black one that has the mounting bar go all the way up. I have extra supports where they just have the little triangle at the bottom (sorry for poor description) but I know they care off a later truck
My truck came with a regular radiator but I have a super cooling radiator in my parts pile
Thanks for the pics fordguy. I just posted that question in another thread (maybe one of yours?) that numberdummy was involved with too.
I was curious under what circumstances the different mounts were used. I've had the large Super Cooling radiators for fitting both types of mounts. Found out the hard way actually, when I bought my first replacement it was of a type to utilize the lower style in your pics with the full height flanges as part of the core support.
Had to re-order a different one and got the one to fit my support that has just the holes with speed nut clips (or whatever they're called) and the radiator itself has the mounting flange as part of the side supports.
Interested to hear the answer to that one that's been a mystery to me.
For the record, mine is a '79 F350 4wd that came with a radiator of unknown size.
When I bought the truck it had a standard sized radiator. I noted it and the owner said that he thought it had the super cooling radiator originally, but when the truck had overheated and needed a new one while he was on a trip, they replaced it with just what was available.
According to NumberDummy's comments in the other thread, the support openings were different sizes for the different radiators. I had not known that, so will measure mine tomorrow and that should clue me in on what it had originally.
@NumberDummy can you confirm why there are different radiator supports in my pic? Is the one for a super cooler and one for a regular or is one a 73-77 and the other 78/79? Or what? Is the only difference for a 74 radiator support and 74 super cooling radiator support the opening size?
The 79 f350 I bought for axles had 9/16” studs on rear and 1/2” on front. I swapped fronts for 9/16” and it was a pita to find the right ones. Also had to buy new rotors after the first redrilled ones started cracking.
as for core supports, there are different size openings and different mounting points. One has a radiator that uses the front flange, other uses rear. I have some and will get some pix shortly.
Hmmm so the mounting brackets correspond with the core support... wonder why they used different versions. Design change or 4x4 vs 2wd or just random... wonder if number dummy knows
Thanks for the info! Apparently all the radiators I have (4) plus the ones I've paid attention too all had the rear mounting set up. The pics of the radiators helped clear that up!
@NumberDummy Will a non highboy Dana60 rear (78/79) bolt up to a highboy frame or are the shock absorber/ leaf spring mounts in a different position with the narrower frame? Or will any Dana 60 rear bolt up directly to my highboy frame?
I should let ND answer, but I'll go out on a limb and say no. Or not without a little re-work that is.
The frame widths in the rear are something like 38" for the later trucks and 34 (maybe?) for the Highboy.
Not sure about the shock orientation, but the width alone would effect them at least a little too.
Wait for the expert(s) to verify that of course. I'm just going by what I remember from bumper brackets and stuff, and could have the numbers skewed a bit. But the Highboy is definitely narrower in the rear.
Now, if the Camper Specials with the extended wheelbase continued into the '78/'79 times, and still had their narrower frame width, then it's possible a rear end from a CS could fit a HB with less "tweakage" needed.
Thats kind of what Im thinking. I figured the narrower frame would make the mounts land in a different spot. Just wanted to know what all will fit before I go out looking. Hopefully ND can confirm soon. Thanks for the reply
