Has anyone tried the Chinese 1904 knock-offs selling on eBay? (http://tinyurl.com/y9mmqoaa ) I'm collecting parts for rebuilding my 215. I've found an Offy 2x1 manifold and instead of trying to find/match up a pair of 1904s I thought I'd ask if anyone has tried these. I'm also wondering if a glass bowl would interchange. These don't have the adjustable main jet like the Agrentinian built ones do so that shouldn't be a problem. I know quite a few vintage racers that have been using Chinese Weber knock-offs for years and love them (mostly 44IDFs.)
Hmm, I just checked the link on a different computer and it went where it was supposed to go. Granted the first picture is upside down... But yes, your link points to the same carb I intended.
Are you referring to the cam? There were tons of Holleys made with plastic rather than steel and the plastic cams are still available. Or am I missing something else? Wouldn't be the first time. ;-)
I realize parts may be an issue. But I'm thinking (aka: rationalizing) that most kits for the 1904 run around $50+ these days. Couple that with the chance of me finding two carbs that match and work well together and aren't worn out... When I look at what's on ebay 1) the prices kill me for just the junk ones and 2) many of them are for IH, Jeeps, etc. although many assume they're all Fords.
I can't fault your logic, except that sooner or later you'll need a kit for the Chinese carb, and I have no idea if kits are even offered for them. Cost?
When I needed a 94, I set an alert on eBay, and after a couple months a genuine deal showed up.
You might email "51Panelman" on here, he had a 2x1 setup on his 215 for a while, but I think he gave up on it. He may be willing to part with his carbs.
"51 Panelman" did give up on his 2x1 carb set-up. Try as he may, he couldn't get it to work right with his original distributor and points. I believe the take-away from Panelman's experience is that if you want to run multiple curbs, you will need to up-grade your ignition system. The ignition up-grade may also require changing over to 12V. In the end, Panelman wasn't willing to make changes to his very carefully restored stock truck for what would have been a very small gain in performance. There are lots of pictures and discussion here on FTE and also on the HAMB documenting Panelman's attempt to get his 2x1 carb set-up to work.
I met Panelman on-line in 2014 when I first started looking for a few little parts for my truck. He introduced me to Bob Jones, who introduced me to FTE.
Good luck with your project. I was able to find a number of Holley 1904 carbs in our local scrap yard.
Thanks, Jim. I know it won't be a tire spinner, no matter what I do. Just leveling out the mixture available to the cylinders (and they look cool. ) I've already got a 300 distributor, new gear and oil pump with matching hex drive and shaft to replace the L-O-M dizzy. I also have several ideas on getting the proper amount of vacuum advance once the engine settles in.
Beav, it looks like you have gathered the right parts, and have the technical knowledge, to make your duel carb set-up work. I'll be anxious to follow your progress on this. When reading about Panelman's attempt, I think people were encouraging him to also install duel exhaust to take full advantage of the additional air/fuel flow to his engine.
