Vibration over 70mph

Anyone else have a vibration or shaking in the steering wheel when driving over 70? Seems to be more pronounced when hauling my trailer. I did swap the steering dampener with a fox unit and it improved over the stock one,but it’s still there. Any thoughts?

I’m interested to see if anyone chimes in on this. There was another thread a while back on it. I fought this on my ‘17 F250 for 30,000 miles. I never found a definite solution, and last I knew no one else really had either. I went through a front end alignment, road force balancing the tires multiple times, replaced a tire (had the oem Michelin LTX AT2 20”), and replaced the steering stabilizer with the Fox 2.0 (helped immensely, but didn’t totally eliminate it - probably just helped mask the real problem). Dealer would say they had it driving smooth as glass, and I’d go anywhere from a mile from the dealer to 500 miles and it’d be doing it again. I still think it was tire related, or a combination of tires and something. The new stabilizer made it bearable, so I kind of gave up. Some surfaces would be fine, and others would really get it going. I think there are a few members on this forum that are going through a buy back by Ford for this issue. I traded mine for a ‘19 (after driving a co-workers ‘18 over the same areas that made mine vibrate and his was fine) and it hasn’t done it yet. I’m still going to replace my stabilizer with the Fox 2.0 because I think it will drive that much nicer. Wish I had a better answer!

Thanks for the feedback. I have a feeling it may be wheel or tire related. Seems worse since the rotated the tires before the trip. Always been there, but is worse. I hope it’s not the dreaded wobble. I sure as hell won’t keep the truck if it is.

Have the same problem with my truck. After bringing it home, I had local Discount Tire balance all tires. Took 13.5 oz over all four tires to balance out (20" rims). It is better, but still get random vibrations from 65 to 75 mph. I'll take to the dealership as soon as I can and see if they can help. I'll hopefully be able to get a tech or service writer in the truck with me so they can verify what I'm experiencing.

Gents- In an effort to assist, please list the specs of your trucks. Doing so will enable some of the smart guys to possibly focus in on what could be causing the trouble. Thanks.

Rotate your tires to see if that helps. One of your steering tires could be slightly off.

Mine did the same thing from 65 to 75. 2017 F-250 Lariat with OEM Michelin LTX AT2 20”. I let it annoy me for 20,000 Miles & then switched to the 295/65/20 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Not one vibration anymore at any speed. Best riding, Extremely Quiet (Same as Stock), all terrain tire I have ever had. The only thing I changed was the tires, so I belive those to be the issue.

I’m not an expert by far. From what I’ve read it could be a combination of things: worn front suspension parts (odd at very low miles), castor angles, and tires.

For me it was more noticeable after a tire rotation, but it was there before. Seems to be more noticeable when towing my smaller trailer (around 3500lbs loaded), but that trailer has a higher tongue weight due to how it loads. Could be just enough of an angle to throw off my castor enough. Also a tire out of round or balance is the likely culprit.

tires out of balance may send vibration to the cab and steering wheel but it should still drive straight. if the steering wheel is going back and forth then i suspect you have more problem than just tire out of balance

Road Force balancing is an under utilized tactic when chasing vibrations. Tires are often blamed when inferior balancing is actually the culprit.

2019 350 CrewCab 4x4 DRW, 4.10 axle. I've had mine up to 96, entirely by accident. I was driving back on the interstate after picking it up and set the cruise control. On my car, to go faster, you push the up button and hold it to increase the speed. The cart continues to increase speed until you let go. I had done this in the truck with the adaptive cruise control. Didn't realize I had sent it all the way up to 96 :-O!!!. Then the car in front of me moved over. Took me a minute to realize I was going 96 before I hit the brakes. I really wanted to respect the break-in period. That was the only mishap, but within the first 25 miles. I drove it the rest of the way home, 1500+ miles. No vibrations yet.

Only vibrations I get were from the lane departure warning, which has since quit working. Still haven't had time to read up in the manual, since it's a brand new truck. I have gone as far to check that it is still enabled.

I thought lane keep assist meant it would actually steer you back into the lane after setting off the departure warning. Maybe that was another truck I drove, a Chevy, that did that. Those big things that look like a hearse on steroids. Or maybe that isn't working either. Still need to read up on it.

2017 leveled with aftermarket wheels and tires (see signature).10000 miles on truck and tires. My steering wheel vibrates noticeably at 60mph and above. It seemed to get worse after my last tire rotation and balance. I had Discount Tire road force balance, the guy told me they were perfect, he couldn’t do any better. I drove for two days, still vibrated. I returned to Discount, they checked the balance again and their machine said my tires required more weight they were out of balance. They’re guessing I have a bad set. They ordered me a new set of tires. I’ll let you know if the new tires fix my issue.

Truck - '17 F350 CCSB, 6.7, FX4, 20" wheels, Michelins, currently ~5800 miles

My truck has done that since new. I took it in once and the dealer rebalanced tires, they were off a lot from the factory. It helped quite a bit when not towing. The next time I towed, the vibration was worse than unloaded. I took it back in, they rechecked the balance and rotated the tires. That helped a little when towing. I still have a little vibration at ~65+ when not towing and it's a little worse while towing.

When we get back after our Thanksgiving week camping trip, the truck is going in for the annual oil change and fuel tank TSB, so I'm going to bring it up yet again and ask for a road balance since it'll be the third time. If it still isn't fixed, I'll pay for road balancing just to try that. If it's still there, I'll probably start getting the tires and wheels looked at more closely. I know guys who've had the stock 20" Michelins replaced under warranty.
