Does any one know if there is a standard transmission that will bolt to a 390 FE motor that is a 5 or 6 speed. I need to go junk yard diving but I don't know what to look for or what model truck would have something that will fit my 1969 390 motor.

NV4500, but you need to piece it together.

Nothing factory is going to bolt up to an FE, since the FE was ditched after 1976. Long before any of the 5 or 6 speed overdrives.

That said, it's possible, but it's not easy, or cheap.

OK, you just have to love working on the old trucks. Trying to find parts is like playing the lottery.

I read the post and what he did to put an over drive tranny in his truck. I need for my rich uncle to die and leave me some cash. "O" wait I don't have a rich uncle. I guess I am going to improvise something. Shade tree or Red neck over drive look out cause here I come.

There is 69 F250 truck with a standard tranny at the same house and the lady will sell it too.. I do not know much about the tranny other than it is in the floor with a long shifter I can not see what the marking are on the shifter ****. The set up is original to the truck and her dad has a sprayer and tank in the bed of this F250. The hood will not open with out force so I did not open the hood so I do not know what motor it has. The bed is rusted out and trash. The cab and interior looks ok from want I can see. $200. truck in my opinion. I have no use for the 3/4 ton set up.

Climb under the truck. If it's a V8 it has an FE and a 4 speed that'll fit your engine. 33" tires, a 3.25 rear end and a 4 speed. It'll pull up any boat ramp if there's no wet seaweed on it. Guess how I know that.

I haven't tried launching a boat with mine as of yet. I'm sure it would be fine, especially with limited slip. But the thought of possibly sinking it just doesn't sit well with me haha. It's kinda light on the *** end.

No seaweed on the ramp, but really steep. I will get the vin numbers and see what engine it has. The truck is a 3/4 with a long bed and was used as a commercial truck spraying chemicals. There is a chemical pump and tank in the bed of the truck. I want to see if I can get a locker to fit the rear end that I have is my 69 truck.

An F-250 has a Dana 60 rearend which is totally different from your Ford 9/9 3/8" axle. Absolutely no same reciprocity in parts. I believe that 9 3/8" axles did come with Trac-Locks limited slip differentials, but probably would be very hard to find nowadays.

is there an automatic tranny with over drive that will fit the FE engine? I am just trying to figure out a way to help the gas mileage that these FE's get. I would guess since there is not a standard there probably is not an auto tranny either.

No. Everything has to be adapted. The last year for the FE was 1976. 4 years prior to the introduction of the AOD in cars...

As Rich said if it's an F250 it has a Dana 60. The ratio is probably 3.73 or 4.11 but lockers are common for them. For the $3-4 K that an AOD or Gear Venders Overdrive will cost a set of 33" tires with your 3.25 gears probably sounds better all the time.
