Strange problem with Temp Gauge

Last night on my way home I stopped at a red light, while waiting I heard a couple of thumps. When stopped at the next red light I noticed that the Temp gauge was rising (heating up) past the middle point but then it went down past the middle point, one thing I noticed after that is that I can't rev my car passed 70MPH. Any ideas why is this? This is a 95 Ranger XLT V6 with 136K miles on it. I got home and idled the truck but did nothing, only kept the needle down past the middle point.

Sounds like your thermostat might be dying. The thumping I think would be the coolant escaping to the overflow bottle. Then again it could be that it just had some air and had to "burp".
