I am working on a 96 f150 trying to get the 4x4 to work. I have not had any luck finding a wiring diagram for the system. All the fuses are good. There are no lights on the dash that come on when moving the selector **** in the dash. What controls the 4x4 actuator on the transfer case? Is it the PCM? Or is it relays?. I checked for voltage at the actuator and get no voltage on any pins in the plug. I have around 3.5v at the selector **** and the voltage changes when the **** position is moved. With only showing that small amount of voltage im guessing the **** just sends voltage to a controller. Not very familiar with the f150s. Thanks Justin.
I believe the selector switch simply engages the motor on the t-case, there may be a small "control box" but it's going to be very simple and not prone to failure. This motor can be removed to test it without a load and chances are it is failing but sometimes the t-case can get stuck too. With the motor electrically disconnected you will get a better voltage reading at the connector, an electric motor is basically a dead short to DC so it's near impossible to get an accurate voltage reading with it in the circuit. The most common failure with an electric motor is delamination of the magnets from the case which binds up the motor, age and corrosion causes this so it's not something that can be easily fixed.. best to just replace the motor.
