I have a 1998 Ford Expedition 4x4, with A4wd. It will go into A4wd but if i turn the switch to 4h it makes a faint clicking from under the dash and then the A4wd light comes on. i know the front axle is engaging because i got it off the ground and when in A4wd all of the wheels turn. i have checked every fuse i can find and have already replaced the 4x4 selector switch.. no luck, still does the same thing. It also wont shift to 4L. on a separate topic, heater in the back works but not the front, ideas?
im no expert, but have you checked the transfer case motor? if your not hearing it when u select 4low and getting no lights, i would look there first. from what ive heard its a very common failure item.
Yep im starting to think that it is the t-case motor, going to pull it off and look at it tonight, but im worried that if it is electrical, it may not be telling the motor to switch. Is there any way to test if a signal is being sent to the connector for the t-case motor.
check in the service manual. i would hook up leads to the connector going into the tcase motor and then switch to 4lo and see if you get a voltage. most lkely 12vdc. just a guess here so take it for what its worth. you can also ring(ohm) the tcase motor to see if its open or if the resistance is very high. both would indicate failure in the motor windings. do you hear a click when switching to 4lo in the dash?
