Isnt that missing the screen that keeps water out of the injectors?

{{{{{{{{{ 7.3 Powerstroke Guy...... I had a hard time keep the tapered seal on the Duralast in one place when tightening the cap down.}}}}}}}

Over the years I have seen four different types of 'o-rings' (round, square, beveled, flat with rounding in the center of the flat area) that go in between the fuel bowl cap/filter and the fuel bowl. With a couple of these 'types of o-rings', they will slide and twist just a little when the cap is tightened real tight and then will leak/spray (and make a huuuge mess)..... I do not believe that your issue is the 'cap', per se'.... but the o-ring and how it may have been installed/tightened.

I have never had an issue with the beveled gasket, just make sure that it is oriented correctly.

The Wix 33818 has the water separator so I imagine the Napa Gold has one too.

What screen are we talking about?

"What screen are we talking about?"

It's not really a "screen" in the conventional sense, it looks more like a fine mesh skirt around the filter itself. Some after market filters don't have it, but the stock Ford motorcraft filter does.

Ok...I just replaced my filter due to a leak and it was due anyway. Luckily it was just oozing from the edges.
And just like many...got the Duralast. After install I did run it a day to and from work then warmups to move the truck around when I cleaned the shop but.... still a small fuel puddle underneath the truck. Not as much as when I first found the problem but...still there.
The sides of the bowl is dry this morning so I am hoping it is residual after the change. The engine valley no longer has a swimming pool of fuel and is almost dried out... soaked A LOT of it up with paper towels when I changed the filter.
Anyway... after reading this thread, I checked out the Napa Gold FIL3818. Two O-rings??? WTH?? I have never seen anything other than 1 with all others. Where does the second one go? I have fought like mad with the duralast. Had to reverse the o-ring and and really tighten it to seal it up. Would be nice to get one that works.
But back to the Napa.... 2 rings?

Yup..the WIX i ran for years since i had an endless supply of them, had 2 orings. The 1 that eludes you goes on the bottom of the filter. Even the cheapo ebay filters i loaded up on has 2 ringers.

Exactly. One for the filter, one for the cap. Just used the Wix at last replacement, am very happy with its results thus far. I don't remember if it had the mesh skirt around it or not though. I know when I did the change, one of them had and one didn't cuz I was wondering why they looked different, but I can't remember if the skirted one was coming or going.

Billy - Have you checked the fuel bowl drain valve O-rings? If you still have a leak and the fuel bowl lid is dry it may be a good place to look.

One Oring for the cover and one for bottom of filter. I lubricant them both with diesel and if changing them in the winter, keep the filter in the house until I’m ready to swap them.

yep. I crawled under and wiped everything down. I am betting it is residual. Seemed to be drying up underneath as well. Drain tube is dry and I double checked the valve. Orings on that we’re replaced some time ago and have been good since.

My fuel bowl has had the same cap for 19 years.

Not the same style cap, but the same exact actual physical cap, the original fuel bowl cap installed on the production line when the engine was built, without a single leak.

The original production cap hasn't been a "wear item" in nearly two decades of service. There has never been any recommendation by Ford or International to change the original cap. In fact, the instructions that International, Ford, and Racor have each provided with the filter service kit show a diagram of all the parts involved, and refer to the cap as a "Reusable Lid". Why change a "Reusable Lid"? (other than to use cheaper aftermarket filters that incorporated their own cap likely to get around Racor's original patent)

My cap has been on and off plenty of times, as I change fuel filters every 9,000 miles, resealing the original cap with a new OEM bevel cut gasket that comes with the new OEM filter manufactured by Racor for Ford and Motorcraft.

I've never heard of Duralast fuel filters, and have never tried Wix or Napa. It is cheap enough to bypass the Ford dealer by buying the Racor ParFit 4596 filters by the case, without the Motorcraft box and mark up, for 1/3 the cost.

I made my statement because I had two Motorcraft fuel bowl covers blow out on me after fuel filter replacement. In both cases, each cover was on top of only the second filter it had seen in its life. All gaskets and o-rings were replaced along with the fuel filter (Motorcraft) of course. Suddenly laying down a smoke screen like an M1A1 evading enemy fire as I go down the road is not my idea of fun.

I switched to Wix 33818 filters and that completely solved my problem. I *do* run elevated fuel pressures though. The injectors I have cause a pretty hefty pressure drop (~12psi) on hard acceleration so the elevated pressure is to keep it from dropping below 60psi.
