For my 2010 f-250, 5.4. I currently have a open rear and am considering putting something in. Main reason is I have a steep 1/4mile long gravel driveway. If I grade it and pack it down using 4x4 I can drive my focus for weeks no problem. Soon as I go up in the pickup in 2wd washboard starts forming immediately. I’ve tried everything from crawling, to “speed is your friend” and it always slips and starts making washboard.
I also have have issues every time I go even in wet grass I have to use 4wd.
Will a true-track or similar help? How much would it cost installed? In at 100k and need to do rear diff fluid again anyway.
A locker for the rear will defintely help. A locker in the front will make it nearly unstoppable in 4X4, but is a pain to deal with on the paved road. If it were me, I wouldn't spend money doing something to the truck. I would put it towards having the drive graded and paved.
I put a Truetrac in my 2wd Dually, it works flawlessly, never wears out, outstanding road manners and worth every single penny! It’ll work far better on the road than a locker will too. You’re looking at around $600ish for the Truetrac plus installation. I recommend you find the absolute best price on the Truetrac THEN find a shop to install it. BUT when you get the quote for the Truetrac and installation pay attention to the price they give you on the Truetrac. Some shops want to add a % to the Truetrac which is fine just make sure they don’t take advantage of you. Personally I want to buy everything from the shop doing the work, if there’s a problem down road they can’t blame your part because everything was theirs...

i wish. But well outside my budget. It’s a steep hill I don’t know the % but way worse than any highway. It’s also 150 years old and sunk/eroded 4’ bellow grade so it becomes a water slide when it rains.
I think our opinion of what washboard is is very different. I don't see how washboard could come from a lack of traction on a winter, gravel road (are you getting wheel hop? That might do it). I spent a large portion of my life in the pacific north west running up and down logging roads in whatever I owned at the time (insert corolla and mustang here. Hunting season doesn't wait based on vehicle). Those log trucks would washboard the hell out of a dirt road. It would rattle you off the road if you were going too quick (actually did to my brother's truck). I would think more ruts than washboard in your case, but I can't see it, so could absolutely be wrong. I want to put a truetrack in my truck and based on my studying of them fully support them, but for $1K cheaper you could just use 4WD. Not saying don't get one. That is what I intend to use, but 4WD is free.
Edit: I'm pretty sure wheel hop is causing your washboard. Slow and 4wd is your best bet. Also adding weight to your bed should help.
