I bought a 2003 Ford F150 XLT SuperCrew 5.4 "4x4" a few years ago.
The reason the 4x4 is in quotes is because I found out shortly after buying the truck that it could not go through a muddy area in the road to my farm. My old Honda Passport could make it through with no problem.
I researched the VIN and found out I have an open front and REAR Diff. I understand the front open Diff, but how the heck do you call something a 4x4 when it transfers 100% of the power to the 2 wheels with the least traction??? Am I missing something As best I can tell I have a 2x4, usually front left and right rear.
Seriously, what purpose/use is an open rear diff in a 4x4?
Is there a way to get this thing to act like a rear truck without spending $$$? Any secrets?
must have been an option. Most of the CREWS I have seen have the LS unit. My 2001 F150 CREW had a LS unit, and my present 2002 CREW has the LS unit. Working correctly, it will go MANY places in 2 wheel drive. Several years ago in 4 x 4 I drove it 2 miles thru 20 inches of snow... plowing with the bumper all the way.
First you can't have a front LS or it would be very hard to steer off straight in or out of 4wd.
The rear should have been an LS.
Maybe the clutches are worn out in the rear.
What does the door column say for rear original equipage?
Don't be so quick to blame before checking these things out.
Its not the first year Ford ever offered 4 wd.
I have 4wd and would not want to be without it here in the north east and having to pull a mountain road in winter when the front and rear wheel drives are in the ditch and cross ways the road. I just wheel around them.
Good luck.
It could have been special ordered with an open rear. Some people prefer them because of less maintenance.
Coach, if you enter your VIN in the site link below it will show you what equipment Ford put into it at the factory. Go to "vehicle" tab in the black stripe and enter your VIN in the box. Vehicle Lookup
