Remote start
I too am interested in this, would prefer to go OEM over aftermarket, but I assume that's either not an option or extremely expensive. I started looking into DEI Viper systems yesterday since I know they used to be at the top of the game 15-20 years ago, but I didn't get too far along.
I have been using the 12volt solutions no honk version for about 3 months and no issues. Works great for me. Just hit unlock/lock/unlock on key fob and truck heats up glow plugs and starts. About a 5-6 second delay before start whether engine is warm or cold. Heat or ac works on last setting you had it on. Took about 15 minutes to install and about 250ish. No wire tapping involved.
OEM is absolutely an option. Do some searching around for a few very informative threads on the topic. Tons of info already on the forums here covering OEM remote start, remote access, smart link, and 12volt.solutions.
I've looked into both the Viper SmartStart and Compustar Drone Mobile. I had the Viper SmartStart on my old Chevy and loved it. My cousin has a 6.0 SD with the Compustar DroneMobile and loves it. My local installer recommended the Compustar system for my 2018 SD.
What I would like to have is to keep the factory fob/push to start and have the app for remote starts, alarms, etc. My installer wasn't sure if I could use the factory fob and have it activate the system without adding the Compustar fob. He was going to research it and get back with me.
I will let the forum know what I uncover.
I'm literally on the fence. I have personal experience with Viper and zero regrets. Lots of questions and specific needs.

I'd recommend the OEM. Plan on $500 for two new key fobs, and the required dealership programming. Sometimes dealers will do it for $450. Buying only one remote key saves even more.
With OEM, your two original fobs for locking / unlocking / panic still work normally. Your new fob(s) will be identical and have all the same functions as your original fobs but will also include the remote start button. Your truck already has all the required hardware to perform remote starting (and stopping). So its literally just programming, nothing to plug in or wires to cut and splice.
I had OEM remote start added to my 2012 years ago by the dealer. My current 2017 has it already, and another nice thing about OEM is that the remote is two-way (a green light illuminates if the engine started and a red light if it did not). For diesel engines, the truck automatically waits the correct amount of time for the glow plugs to heat based on outside temp. Also nice, the OEM automatically turns on the heat or A/C based on the outside temp. When you add OEM, you can also use the dashboard menu to change how long you want the engine to idle before it shuts down. For example, you remote start and then get a lengthy phone call. Instead of the truck idling for an hour, it shuts off automatically after 15 minutes, etc.
I would never buy an aftermarket when OEM is available, just my opinion.

I have 12 volt solutions. Couldnt be easier install and keep the stock key fob. bout $ two fitty and worth every penny. Install took all of 10 mins. Youtube has a vid of them doing the install at a red light and a 10 yr old doing it. Git R Done :-)

So your saying with this kit I do not need the two additional fobs?
